Does anyone else think Roy Scheider faked his death and is now captaining the Cornelia Marie other than me?
Murray = Roy Scheider! Yes!
He’s found that bigger boat…
Well not the ones in the know. They really do not make that much money on the show. Much less than you could imagine. Most crew members do not think it is worth it to have the cameras on board. I know of several boats that have flat out refused Discovery Channel’s offers. The locals and ones in the know laugh at the drama a bit. And the danger is way over rated. They make it more dangerous than it should be looking for larger waves than necessary for drama and film. I only saw a week of filming or so cameras were everywhere. You had to sign a release just to eat at the local restaurant. Dutch Harbor Locals hate the Discovery Channel. In fact when were gonna charter another boat for some interesting camera angles for our movie the first thing the Captain said was “Are you Discovery Channel” Many don’t do business with them any more. But no one particularly hates the fishermen, just the camera crews.
After it airs I will dissect a great seen I witnessed and tell you how it was instigated.
I don’t think any other captains want that film crew on their boats. What you see is likely all you will ever get.
Chicken-necking? I did that once. We caught one lousy keeper, so we ended up buying a couple dozen. I discovered that I prefer my blue crab at a restaurant, where I don’t have to meet it first.
Thanks for the insight!
Looking forward to it.
Eels! That and a 1/4 mile long trot line, and a fishing boat to run up and down the line until we got sick of doing so (or too drunk to continue).
The Mrs. and I caught 12 dozen keepers that day! Ate a hell of a lot of them, picked the meat out of the rest, and then I ruined a wonderfully large batch of crab cakes by stupidly adding baking soda to them instead of baking powder (which is what the recipe actually called for).:mad::mad:
That was back about 1980, IIRC. Back when the bay still had crabs.
I wasn’t surprised either.
I remember watching Deadliest Catch last year right after I had quit smoking, and thinking quiting would be a LOT harder I were a crab fisherman.
Any chance the scene to which you refer has aired yet?
Unfortunately I have not been watching
I will tell you this.
The Time Bandit has opened up a store on the Homer Spit. It is wild. A bunch of useless crap and some books. The sign is hand painted on paper and shitty paint. Worst sign on the whole spit. The great thing is it it real. This is the way fishermen do things.I am having a hard time believing how crazy people are over this show and the Boat and Jonathan. Over a 1/2 hr. wait to shake his hand. Holding babies and shit. That fucking drunk ass coke head is actually bringing some tourists down here. My restaurant had a direct view of were the boat was tied up. The reactions were priceless. Locals of course make fun of the whole deal and we were and have been making fun of it for year, especially after the store came up. You see they own that boardwalk and no one was around to rent the space so they set up shop. My best Spit Friends own businesses directly across and next to it. Good for alot of laughs. But with a shitty start to the season and the purity of some peoples enthusiasm the jokes jave subsided a bit and it is welcome this year. Any other year they would have gotten laughed off their own boardwalk probably. Jonathan is embarrassed to be doing it here in Homer I can tell. To close to home. To much history behind the knowing smiles and laughs.

I have no doubt that a lot of the interpersonal drama is staged just as on other reality shows, and that they’re even setting up some of the big-wave impacts, but the back-breaking hard work, ridiculous working conditions and hours, and lethal danger all seem pretty real to me; having one or two boats sink every season with all hands lost is the real deal.

I don’t wish anything bad on Keith, but neither can I feel any sympathy for him. The guy is a total jerk and a bully, IMO. Phil, on the other hand, I definitely feel for. He was like a sad puppy on that dock when his boat pulled away.
I can’t stand Keith. I dislike him so much it has made it difficult for me to watch the show this year.

I agree with this! My least favorite, and I don’t think he’s the most promising captain. Northwestern’s my favorite crew, Sig’s a good captain and I think Edgar is the most entertaining on the show. He’s like the ‘Jim Halpert’ of the crew. Even when he get’s pissed, he still keeps his sense of humor.

Unfortunately I have not been watching
OK then, can you spoil it?
Well the “King Crab” season is done, and they’re off looking for opies.
So come on fifty-six, enquiring minds want to know.
Personal comment. I love the footage of the fishing, and the “documentary” bits of it. But I find that Thom Beers is trying too hard for the melodrama. The misleading teasers are quite amusing:
Season trailer for last season made it look like the Wizard was sinking.
(a) some deeply moving voice over
(b) shot of open water with voice/caption “Mayday mayday mayday” (from whatever that cod-fishing boat that sank with significant crew casualties)
© cut to shot of Keith on bridge with main alarm going (from start of this season where he’s in Dutch Harbor when the engine fails)
(d) cut to random shot of water pouring into a bilge
(e) cut to montage of captains looking serious
(f) fade to shot of open ocean
(g) fade to black
Mike Rowe’s commentary occasionally sounds like something out of Moby Dick – I do wonder how he can speak it with a straight face.
So Phil’s back, and Murray’s leaving? Wonder if his poor performance during king crab season had anything to do with his departure. And Phil’s still smoking. Come on Phil - start chewing gum instead!

In the Dirty Jobs “behind the scenes” episode, they revealed that he does much of his voiceover work in motel rooms with a towel over his head.

My jaw almost dropped. “Yeah, the doctors cleared me to come back, but at the first sign of trouble, I have to get airlifted out of here.” ::lights up::

I used to think Keith was a jerk because of his temper, but he comes across as a lot more human this season. From my own experience, I think the tobacco has something to do with it. I was more impatient and had a quick temper when I smoked, even when I wasn’t having a nic fit. And I bet that’s nicotine gum he’s been chewing all season. It takes some of the edge off, but I found my emotions a lot closer to the surface when I was on lozenges. Since he’s been nearly moved to tears a couple of times this season, I think that might have something to do with it too. On good days, I can relate to him. On bad days, he reminds me of my asshole soccer/T-ball/basketball coaches in elementary school.
Ultimately, a lot of what we think of the crews probably is because of editing. Apparently the Maverick isn’t on the show any more largely because of previous captain and his wife being upset with how they were portrayed and how they and the new captain had been portrayed.
It sucks that Murray retired too. I don’t think it was because of their season, since they ended up catching/earning about twice as much as all the other boats on king crab. I wonder if it had to do with being captain? Maybe this shows how much the stress can take out of you?
Anyone else notice how they didn’t mention the Lisa Marie in the final crab count? I wonder how their season ended?
I assumed that the Lisa Marie went down with all hands.

Yeah, at the end of one of the shows, Mike Rowe is going on and on about how badly things are going for Murray and the CM but the crab count shows them right behind the Time Bandit. What’s up with that?
