It makes no never mind what you call it. The farmer regulates his day by the sun not the clock. The Pacific islander likewise. OTOH the city dweller has to have a time reference to cordiante his activities with others in his city and elsewhere. Hence Standard Time and a multitude of other types.
Some years ago Louisville KY and areas to the north and east moved to the Eastern time zone.
You have a choice move to the time zone you like or get the time zone moved to cover your home town.
During WWII, they switched to DST 1/2 the year, and DOUBLE DST the summer half of the year. It saved that much energy.
What it is- for some damn fool reason the schools and corporate America have decided on a certain scedule (for corp america it’s “9to5”). They just won’t change. It’s likely illegal to make them change (well, yes, the Govmint could do it for the schools, but there are too many Yayoos). Soooo- it’s easier to change the time-zones.
I just started a Pit thread about this before I saw this thread. Daylight Saving Time is a blessing and should be extended to the whole year. The good news is the 2006 - 2007 calendar has an added month of Daylight Saving Time added. The bad news is that the original bill called for a two month increase and it got compromised down.
I still can’t comprehend why people care if it is light or dark in the morning. It is still just morning, the time of showers, breakfast, and travelling to where you need to go.
Working somewhat long hours in an office in the Boston area during Standard Time effectively means that you might as well live at the North Pole. Light after 5 pm is the only hope for mental wellbeing.
Er… taking walks/bike rides in the park, playing outside with your kids, walking to friends’ houses, taking the bus with a reasonable assurance of safety. Pretty much any kind of outdoor physical activity, unless you live in a low-crime area or don’t care about traipsing along outside at night. Also some people have a hard time adjusting emotionally to lack of sunlight. I don’t know, I thought most people were all up in getting more sunlight after work, but I guess not.
Time changes are one of the few issues I have no real opinion on, except that I wish they wouldn’t keep switching the change day around, because I’m liable to miss it. They need to drop flyers from the sky and send everyone to time camp for two weeks, that would do it.
