"no going back to brunch"--Huh?

What does the expression “back to brunch” mean?

I googled it, I checked “know your meme” dot com.But with no results. It seems to be a unique phrase that AOC made up.

For context: AOC just sent out a tweet that , after the death of justice Ginsburg, the stakes are higher, the election is even more serious, and everybody on the left needs to unite.
Okay, that makes sense.
But what’s brunch got to do with it?

Now… me, I like my eggs scrambled. And bagels and lox. With 2 pieces of cantaloupe, and a large strawberry. But no bacon.

I would take it to mean the same as “not resting on your laurels” - i.e. - can’t get complacent.

yeah,I agree…that’s what I figured, from the context.
But I still think it’s a weird use of language.
And we Dopers love to nitpick other people’s language.

I would take it to mean that sometimes you only have one opportunity. If you see something you like in the brunch buffet line, take it now; you can’t go back through the line a second time. Or metaphorically, vote this November because there won’t be an opportunity to change politicians afterwards.

Thanks to COVID, brunch has gone the way of the buggy whip.

Given her oeuvre to date, I suspect she means that liberals need to be seriously active at supporting their causes all the time, and not take time out for frivolities like brunch. Because see what happens when you relax even for a moment?

Her message is directed at liberals, not progressives, who are already too enlightened to take brunch.

p.s. there’s no reason one can’t take brunch in the age of Covid. What is really out the window is buffets. You just need to order from the menu.

“Brunch” and “Buffet” are inseparable in my mind. Might be a California thing.

Looking at the tweet that went along with the phrase, AOC looked EXHAUSTED. I think that’s worth keeping in mind as we pick apart her tweet
.

She was talking about the need for mass movements even if Biden were to win. So it means no return to the status quo.

“Brunch” is when, “buffet” is where.

I interpret it as urban liberals getting together and doing boozy brunch (which is definitely a thing) and talking about how great Elizabeth Warren is, but not really doing the grassroots stuff that the Bernie wing of the party pushes.

It’s probably related to an old Leo Durocher expression, “Nice guys finish lunch.”
