(Hope the full title fits…)
Ok. It’s June 11. Minicamps aren’t even in full swing, at least not the real, pads-on ones. It’s a wee early for football.
But I thought I’d gauge some interest in this.
For years, I’ve run a tiny, free football pool online. It’s simple. You pick the winners only, except for the Monday night game, in which you pick the winner and the total number of points scored.
That’s it. There’s no handicapping, no guessing the number of turnovers or catches by men named Bob.
And most importantly of all, no money. It’s free.
Here’s how it would work on here:
-
I’d post the official schedule on Monday or Tuesday for the week’s games.
-
You post your picks in the thread. This way your picks are out there for all to see. Yes, you can change them - but only up till noon Eastern time on Sunday (8 pm Eastern Monday for the Monday game).
-
At the conclusion of each week’s games, I’ll post the winners of the week. If two or more people have the same record, it comes down to the total points scored in the Monday night game. Closest to the actual total wins and therefore gets the tiebreaker for the week. (The total points scored will only be used in the event of a tie.)
-
If a person somehow misses a game while making his or her picks, they don’t get a win or a loss for that particular game.
-
Ah, you say. So then it would behoove me to not pick any winner for the games that are tough to pick. Better not to have picked at all than to have picked wrongly, right? Well, no. Because . . …
-
The standings to date will be posted at the end of each week at the same time as the next week’s schedule. These standings will be listed in order of wins, not winning percentage. So if Person A picks 10 games and gets 6 right, he or she is 6-4. If person be picks 9 games (missing one) and gets 5 right, he or she is 5-4. Person A is ahead of Person B, 6 wins to 5.
-
Okay, you say. But Person B could have picked 6 of 9 and would therefore be ahead, right? Yes. But over the course of an entire season, this will even out. Because …
-
Occasionally, people won’t get their picks in on time. So it’s not as if after eight weeks there will be, say, 20 people with the same number of games picked. There may be some with all 128 games, some with 112 (having missed a week), and so on.
The cool thing about this is that anyone can play it. Don’t know from American football? So what? You have a 50/50 chance of picking the right team. See? No skill involved.
Depending on the interest, I am willing to offer a prize. Since there’s no money involved on your end, I don’t think this would qualify as gambling. But before I offer anything, I want to check with the Powers That Be to see if it’s okay.
So. As I said at the beginning of this long-winded post, I thought I’d gauge some interest first.
Feel free to say yea or nay in here, and ask any questions you might have.
