Surprised there isn’t a thread on this since it’s a pretty beloved series of movies. I thought the movie was great, but not the best of the three. I knew that the writer/director/creator wanted the series to be a trilogy from the start and it was nice to see the story wrapped up so well. I definitely cried, but I cry over everything so it’s not that big of a deal.
I definitely want to see this movie, but I don’t know if I’ll get to do it in the theater - I’ve had over $1500 in unexpected expenses this month so my budget is tight enough to squeal. If not the theater I’m getting a copy for home.
IIRC the animation company created a brand-new way to capture movement in the second movie, which is why the characters moved so seamlessly and there was such detail in small things like hair and Toothless’ scales.
I tell you the part that really got me was when
Astrid took the reigns off her dragon. I knew it’d be a moment for Hiccup to do the same for toothless, but Astrid doing it to her dragon (whose name annoyingly escapes me) and seeing the village release their dragons was just heartbreaking. I loved the fast forward to the future ending too, it’s so nice to see a movie series end on such a beautifully happy note, it’s so rare nowadays
Jay Baruchel was a perfect voice for Hiccup when he was a kid in the first movie, but his voice didn’t seem to match the character as he aged.
Also, if it helps, Astrid definitely got hotter as she aged and the way she treated and cared for Hiccup made her all the hotter because you could tell she actually cared for him and treated him perfectly.
An underrated part of the trilogy is their relationship IMO. It wasn’t just a carryover that the nerdy boy got the hot warrior girl and they had some BS problem that affected their relationship or whatever. Throughout all three movies, the pair had a really strong and supportive relationship of each other.
I agree with all above. An enjoyable movie and a good wrap up to the series. Not as good as the first two. Not as emotional as #2. Still a good movie and I’m glad I saw it in the theater. Excellent voice work by F. Murray Abraham.
My late spouse loved these movies (and the TV series) because he was the nerdy kid with the limp/bad leg who liked to tinker and make things. And he sometimes said I was his Astrid.
My only regret about this movie is that he didn’t live to see it.
