No Kings - 17OCT2026

The No Kings Rally in the Portland OR area apparently had several thousand people. Carla and My Beloved attended (while I was in a Zoom meeting for Norwescon) and said it went well.

This time I didn’t even though I usually do. By the time I could tell that it was a protest rather than people holding electioneering signs (from either party) I was in the wrong lane.

More like, “A protest is only likely to work if it’s really big.” Such as the 3.5 percent rule. It also needs to be sustained protest; getting 3.5 percent of the population to show up for one or two days, then going back home as if nothing happened, is unlikely to do the trick. (even for single-day protests, No Kings did not reach 3.5%)

I guess it depends on what “the trick” is. I agree that alone it’s unlikely to topple a regime or even bring about meaningful change. It has a role, however.

I keep posting “It’s a Sin to Vote for a Republican,” but you guys (as far as I can see) haven’t been doing much to make it go viral.

Maybe it’s my fault. Should I make it a hashtag?

#itsasintovoteforarepublican

You keep saying that as if society wants to avoid sin.

Televangelists get to, so I should too.

I’m surprised it was that big. Bremerton is my home town and it’s pretty conservative, especially for a town in western Washington.

There’s a benefit to “feeling better about” yourself though! It’s pretty discouraging having the daily flood of excrement produced by the MAGAverse constantly washing over us. It’s a reminder that there are a lot of good people who are trying to do what they can, even if it is just standing up and waving a sign.

I went to my local protest in Madison County, Ohio, which may be the reddest county in this reliably red state.

It was fantastic.

40 or so folks, lots of signs, singing, chanting, and making our voices known… That, friends, is an exciting day.

And yes, for sure, positive feedback from passers-by was FAR outweighing the ~12 fingers we saw, and most of those chickenshits left their windows rolled up.

If you want to dig, I am in some of the public pics. Honestly, it was magnificent.
