"No Kings" rallies, Saturday June 14th 2025

Interesting:

A billionaire Walmart heiress sparked MAGA backlash in a surprise attack against President Donald Trump days before his big birthday bash in Washington D.C.

Christy Walton, 76, took out a full-page ad in the Saturday New York Times Sunday edition titled “USA, USA, USA,” promoting the “No Kings Day” June 14 events across the nation in protest of Trump’s policies.

This is catching on in my area. I’m seeing it more frequently, both flags being flown upside down and decals on mailboxes and vehicles.

It’s a time honored distress signal and I find it highly appropriate for our times.

Mrs. L.A. said, ‘Maybe we should move back.’ I don’t think she meant it, but it means a lot that she said it. As much as I like almost-Canada, I do miss L.A. (and SoCal).

Okay… tried uploading short video of a Trumpy Trucky, with the phony ass pose, Texas plates and, of course, In God We Trust across the Ford hood. On VENTURA BL. and it’s been around before. Hope they get tires slashed.

(If not, can someone point me to the instructions on uploading video here on iPhone )

So I had a conversation with Mrs. Jihi this evening and we’ve agreed to attend a protest on Saturday that’s taking place only a mile or two from our home. It’ll be held in a Meijer parking lot from 11:00 to 1:00.

(For those who don’t know Meijer is a Walmart-esque superstore in the Midwest with gigantic parking lots. We actually do a fair amount of our day-to-day shopping there.)

Neither of us are naturally politically active people, though I tend to follow politics much more closely than she does. She hates the orange menace almost as much as I do, whenever he appears on the TV she vacillates between anger and depression. If he’s on too long we usually just turn the channel or turn the TV off.

We’ve been following what’s been going on in LA very closely since last week and it seems like a turning point has been reached and it’s too important not to participate. Neither of us have ever been to a protest before so we’re not exactly sure what to expect. But we’ll be there.

We live in a small town, but it’s home to a rather large University. I’ve been seeing small street corner protests popping up here and there over the last couple of days. I think the turnout could end up being decent at least.

My tenants flew an upside down flag in front of our rental house back when Trump was first elected. I was slightly nervous, but I said “be my guest.” I may be in Chicago, but my part of the city has plenty of MAGA types.

Trump Refuses To Believe Fox News Reporter Who Tells Him Protests Are Expanding Across the Country: ‘I Don’t Think So’

Before the play, Trump took questions from a throng of reporters outside, where Fox News Correspondent Gillian Turner asked about the demonstrations. Trump responded by telling her he flat-out didn’t believe her:

TURNER: Mr. President, if this turns into another summer of unrest, what are you prepared to do, sir?

TRUMP: About what?

TURNER: If this turns– well, the protests have spread now to 16 cities across the U.S. If this turns–

TRUMP: Well, that’s what you’re saying. Do I believe you? I don’t think so.

TURNER: Well, I got that from the Fox News brain room.

TRUMP: I can tell you, what we have, what we have a situation in Los Angeles that was caused by gross incompetence. They didn’t have the police to handle it.

The president went on to falsely claim the police asked him to deploy the guard.

I went with this one on Redbubble and this D&D-inspired one for the other side.

People from The Home are going to a local “No Kings” rally not far from here. We have family coming over on Saturday, so won’t be participating.

Take them with you!

This is very incomplete. Massachusetts is blank, for pity’s sake, and I know of five events in a 15 mile radius. And those are the small ones.

Bringin a firearm to a nonviolent protest where clashes with police are anticipated is one of the stupidest ideas I’ve heard in awhile.

-le sigh-

Note the whole “stopping myself”, the acknowledgement that it’s a stupid idea because we don’t live in an action movie, that No Kings is explicitly requesting a non-violent and non-confrontational protest, and that I was complying.

Mostly I was just complaining that MAGAs threats and actual actions keeps feeding my paranoia despite my better judgement.

@Ulfreida the map shows me 114 events in Massachusetts when I scroll over and zoom in.

Seconded. I know of multiple events in the Finger Lakes alone, and they haven’t got a single one. They’ve only got two in the entire state of NY!

Well, that’s better; assuming that people think to do that, which they may not when all they see at first is blank spaces. It’s very poor design to start the map off that way.

But they still don’t have Penn Yan, and I’m pretty sure there’s one in Geneva NY. And I know the Penn Yan one is supposed to be official.

Bellingham is on the list. I didn’t know it, but there’s one in Nooksack too. And there’s a ‘No Tyrants’ rally in Vancouver, BC.

Face it, they are everywhere. The nearest one to me is the next town over, population 1700.

I’m going to try for the one in Folsom. I don’t know what to put on a sign, nor do I know how to actually make a proper sign that won’t be too heavy for me to hold.

Maybe they’ll have handouts at the rally sites.

Just a piece of poster board. Keep it simple. Something that can be read by a car passing by or stopped at a light. It can be as simple as just “NO”. Fold the poster board over and put a yard stick in the middle for something easier to hold. Some masking or box tape to hold. And remember, bring your hat, mask, water, pocket first aid kit. Leave your phone at home or put it in Airplane mode.

Cops don’t like yard sticks or anything that can become a weapon. They prefer cardboard tubes.

I like simple though.

Why should I leave my phone at home? Oh. Yeah. Blue meanies make lists.

Paul Krugman argues that marines being sent to LA on a pretext makes a convenient dress rehearsal for marines being sent to urban areas on election day 2026 and 2028 to repress turnout.

Krugman was passing along the views of poll analyst G Elliott Morris.
