No Lo Contendre - MMP

Hope everything’s good Drae. Hope you feel better too Taters.

I’ve been napping. Weird napping. That’s what good pain meds will do for ya. I dreamed I had a pair of reading glasses that picked up radio transmissions. Then I dreamed my futon (where I was napping) was three times as big as it really is and that my computer was on a big shelf over the futon. The only way I could use the puter was to stand up on the futon. I also dreamed that my pool had been moved from where it is to where the deck is now and the deck was now in front of my house. Trippy!

HAR! HAR! Spats.

I’m here! Finally. My replacement-to-be started yesterday so I’ve been training her. And didn’t think the company would approve of me training her on how to do the MMP. Oh well. I like her, and I think she’ll do fine. But man, it’s cutting in to my internet-surfing and job-hunting time!

I got a cold, I think from the woman who was hacking and sneezing last week. Except that I don’t have the same symptoms as she did so maybe I can’t blame her. Dunno. But my throat is sore and I’m not happy. I’d stay home so I don’t share the germs, but I need to be here to train the new employee. :frowning: And I’m going to dinner at friends’ tonight so I don’t feel right skipping work and then going there. So I guess I have to be here feeling miserable. :frowning:

First “real” job I had was in the kitchen of a restaurant at a tourist attraction. Minimum wage was, I think, $5.25. Not bad. Lots of teens working there as a summer job, which helped make it more fun.

Sorry, **rosie **to hear about the judging at the competition. Glad you had fun though.

Sorry to hear that the 3 o’clock thing didn’t go well susan. We’re here for ya.

That’s the excitement from here.

My first more-than-a-month job was at McDonny’s, I don’t remember what I started at, but when I left, after about 2 years, I was up to $1.45/hr.
My first paying computer job was graveyard shift computer operator on a PDP 11/05. I remember having to lay on the floor and flip toggle switches to load the IPL instructions to tell the machine to read the boot-up tape, alltogether too often. They also had a printer than had a paper tape loop for page skips, etc., but my so-called employers were too cheap to buy the little machine to make the tapes, so I had to make new ones with a razor blade. What fun.

I never had much to do with PCs in the early days. Why would I when I had big room-filling computers to play with, with real programming languages* and everything.

The first PC I ever bought was a Packard Bell 286, with a 40M hard drive, partitioned into 32M and 8M 'cause the version of DOS that came on it couldn’t handle anything over 32M. Now my PDA has more memory, and versatility than that thing.

Really? I’da thought that restraining order would have expired by now.

My condolences, Drae.

We ran away to the beach last weekend. It was nice. Read a lot. Watched Elizabethtown and A History of Violence. Elizabethtown started out kinda slow, and some of the music at the beginning was OG-Awful, but it was worth the rental just for the memorial service. And the music got better.
AHOV was good, except I wanted to slap his wife up side of the head.

Our phone line at the house is dead, dead, dead, along with DSL, so this is the first I’ve had a chance to see this week’s MMP. (I’m at the shop.) Just pretend I said all the appropriate things upthread, okay?

I like this policy. Let’s have the regulars assume that all the regulars make the apropriate condolences and well wishes at the correct times.

Newcomers must stay on top of such things for a week to prove their mettle.

Am I happy I’ve already got a week of MMP under my belt.

This had me laughing till I started choking!

OK, everybody cross your fingers!! We’ve got an offer on our boat. It’s way low, but we’re going to counter less than half of the difference, I think. We’ll talk about it tonight and I guess contact the broker tomorrow. Man, if we could sell before May 1, it would be a major relief…

<nervous semi-happy-anticipatory-dance, sorta>

Hi…just dropping by to say hi…had an offsite meeting that ended early-ish. I went to the park for a walk after that and then came home. Now I’m off to work in the garden at church.

Back later…

GT

you should post that on this thread

I’m going to disagree. Personally, I felt better reading many well wishes both when I lost my SIL, and when my grand-nephew was born. It makes me feel connected.

Well, if it does help any, I’m sorry about your loss and your gain respectively.

Well, not sorry about the gain, but I hope you know what I’m talking about.

I’m sorry Rosey, I’ll try to do better next time. It’s just that I’m supposed to be working and didn’t feel that I had time to read back over the entire thread.
You do know that I love each and every one of you, don’t you. ('Cept for that one guy. You know the one. Don’t look! He might see you!)

I’m sorry about your SIL (I think I said so then), and if that was the baby picture I saw last week, he was very cute.

no need to apologize - and I wasn’t chastising anyone for NOT posting - I was just disagreeing with Loune’s suggestion that the regulars don’t post ‘regards’ at all.

No no no. I am the Pontiff of Puns. I awarded you the Honorary Punster of the Week because of your adaptation of Mairzy Dotes, which was hilarious. However, I still reign soupcream in the potently powerful and potentially punishing art of wordplay. So there. :stuck_out_tongue:

rose, I agree with you. It wouldn’t be the MMP if we didn’t do that. Loune, what you’re picking up on is the occasional “ok i’m rushed gotta make this quick” post.

Just now, as I was racing through the MMP and eating a bowl of blackberries, my tummy quite distinctly said “apples.” I don’t think it was anything like if it’d said “Rosebud” 'cause I’ve never been on a sled and I’m just very fond of a good Pippin come autumn, nothing more.

Nope, it was commentary upon the blackberries. They’re bitterish. I’ve spent some time in blackberry country (near Tunisia) and these aren’t good blackberries. I’m eatin’ 'em anyway, because I’m like that. Then I’ll go eat an apple as suggested. Did you know that vampire apple from last easter is still in the fridge? Wrinkled but there-- go Vlad!

My aunt sings SAs and sometimes those judges are uber-picky, like if they think you have one too many sparkles on your collar-- it’s off with your heads!

My weekend was dull and this week tedious (years ago I didn’t understand Dilbert in the least and Office Space was boring, now I laugh until I cry at both), so I’ll spare you. Yer welcome.

Off to water the plants!

Mayhaps it is. Bad Trevor.

susan, how are you feeling today? Let us know.
Oof. I have a headache and I feel a little sick. The sick part may be related to eating practically nothing but some nice tortillas that I just made. There’s also apricot danish (what do you call it if you make big long strudelly things instead of little individual danishes?) and in a few minutes I should cut up veggies and grill chicken for dinner. I’ll probably feel better once I’ve eaten.

It snowed today. All the pretty crocuses will freeze if it doesn’t get warm tonight.
Bumba, that made me laugh out loud, too.

I’m back and have showered all the dirt off (we did major cleaning, including removing yucky leaves from the stairwell that leads to the secret basement door). Amazing what two people can accomplish in just over an hour.

I’m thinking Loune was kidding with his suggestion. Either that, or he was being a lazy college student, which is one of those things we’re here to prevent. Get moving on our retirement income, young man!!!

Lessee…Hi Bumba! Nice to see you drop by. Feeling any more chipper?

Glad you’re getting back to normal, FCM. Hope the boat sells. (I’ll cross all my fingers once I finish typing.)

Sorry your day went sucky, Taters. (Here’s some chocolate…does that help?)

Hope the mucking about went OK, Drae (oooooh, a rhyme!).

So, taxi, will your replacement be inheriting your cold as well??? Just askin’.

Thanks for that enlightening addition to my vocabulary rifty . So, how do I impress someone with my newly gained info?

My first real, non-babysitting job was as a sports stringer for a little weekly paper. It was the county version, so I covered the teams from a rural high schools. You have to understand that there are two sports I know anything substantial about. One of them is Doperball.

So, I got to be chummy with 1) the football coach (my level of sophistication is that I know about downs. I know that you can get extra points by either kicking the ball or running across the line, and that teams sometimes go for field goals instead of trying for another first down or a touchdown. Well, I may know a little bit more than that, but not enough to discuss either team’s strategy.); 2) the very cute basketball coach (again, I know the basics, but nothing intricate), 3) and the wrestling coach (well, I already knew him, cuz he was also the football coach). Can’t remember who coached cross-country, but I at least know stuff about that, courtesy of my brother. I also got to cover a high-school hockey tournament at one point. Can’t remember who gave me a crash course in high-school hockey. Might have been my editor. All I remember about the pay is that I got paid by the inch. Maybe 25 cents/inch? I did this job for about 4 months as a freshman in college, '76-'77 academic year. Then I had a term with way too many classes and decided to go back to babysitting, since I had plenty of study time with that gig. It’s just dawning on me that this was just about thirty years ago. How is that possible? I am NOT old!!!

Oh, and on preview, I see Ashes checked in. ::Waves animatedly:: What? No first job anecdote? Sorry, you gotta come back and fill us in. Oh, and did you hear this mysterious boom this morning? Just read about it on Metafilter. You and scout are in that general neighborhood right?

GT

grumbles Yeah, I’ll get back to working on the retirement-fund.

As soon as I hammer out the finishing details on Mexican immigration, Israel vs. Palestine, and the American Indian treaties, I’ll pick up my Nobel Prize and my half-million dollars. That should help a little bit with the retirement fund, no?
shuffles away, kicking an errant pebble…stupid classes…

Oh, I’m sure that particular light bulb will turn on for you soon.

It’s almost time! The 01:02:03 etc. thing. I’m excited. Because I’m a huge dork.

My first real job sounds pretty good now

$6.00/hr under the table at a restaurant that’s busy enough to make the time go by, but quiet enough that I can sometimes get a little homework done. That, plus people just HAND me money all night long for doing a job that isn’t that hard. My chores are harder and I don’t get squat for those. AND I get free diet pepsi all night long. That’s like giving a crack addict crack AND money.
aaagggghhhh it’s only Tuesday? excuse me while I implode.

Happy Hump Day, all!

I can’t believe I’m first to post this morning. Nothing happening yet to talk about.

My best Bud is here visiting from the other office. I’ve been missing him. That’s one of the downsides to this relocation. They are posting req’s for designers at the old office too, and we will probably lose another designer. Pretty soon there won’t be anyone here! Nah - they are supposed to hire new people, but that will suck for a while until they get up to speed. I’m gonna get a promotion out of this, you better believe it!

Scout, not a day goes by that I don’t spill something on myself. Maybe it has to do with the time of year we were born.

I have no such compunctions. But feel better!! And you too, Lissla!

So, the ultrasound was quick and painless, and I’m such an old hand at it by now that I spent the whole time chatting with the technician. I got stuck in traffic on the way home which severely cut down on my couch potato time, but I was still home by 4:30. The doctor called last night and said that the cyst is now 3.3 cm, down from 4.2, so yay, it’s shrinking. I have to get checked again in about six weeks, and I’m still not allowed to have “relations”, but it’s not like guys were beating down the door before this happened, so I’m pretty sure I can make it.

And I have been exhausted all week. I think it’s the time change. It’s light out, it’s light out, it’s light out, watch a little tv, why is it bedtime???
