Seriously. The guy just surpassed the record for number of wins by an NHL goalie. A little respect, please.
I just can’t. I’m happy for the guy, but…
GO PATRICK ROY!!!
Seriously, though, it is an amazing feat. Roy and Brodeur are both amazing goalies. What is really impressive is that Brodeur broke the record in his 17th season. It took Roy 19 seasons to get to 551.
I tried
Prime Time Sports mentioned that he has something like 30 wins coming the way of the shootout which is something that Patrick Roy never had the benefit of.
Still, he’s a heck of a goalie.
Oh yeah, absolutely the rule changes have been beneficial. But let’s give credit where it’s due. And for Marty it’s due. And he truly seems like a nice guy to boot.
Oh I’m with you, he’s top 5 all time, for sure.
Marty definitely seems to be nicer than Patrick Roy, that’s for sure (I love Roy, but lets be honest here).
I saw a story about Brodeur getting his butt kicked in court regarding how long he’s going to have to pay alimony. I thought it was unfortunate that it had to happen right as he was celebrating such a huge professional triumph.
It’s a fantastic acheivement. I think the reason you’re not seeing so much hype about it is twofold:
-
I don’t remember “wins by a goalie” being a record that many people knew or cared about, and
-
Brodeur plays for a team in a sort of hockey black hole, where Stanley Cups are sometimes sucked in but there isn’t actually a lot of interest in the team. They’re rightly regarded as a model but boring franchise, play in a city nobody cares about (I suspect most hockey fans don’t even know what city they play in*) have no real municipal identity, and don’t have the extensive fanbase you’d assume a successful team would.
- = Newark, in case anyone was wondering.
I think he’s an amazing goalie and quite a nice guy. I was honored to be in the same building with him last Wed night although I would have liked to have seen him play. It’s probably a good thing he didn’t though since Carolina whupped Weeks’ butt.
