No more 'brownies' for you

It sucks getting old. Language is changing too fast for me and I can’t keep up anymore. I am hopelessly behind the times and may as well give up.

I didn’t know that ‘brownies’ is now considered to be a racist term.

will be next :frowning:

Or these. I don’t believe the story unfolded the way it’s portrayed in the article. No way. It’s just too ridiculous.

“Brownies” racist?

To me, “brownies” contain cannabis.

Brownies are safe for the kids to eat, “brownies” not so much.

Yeah, actually that’s what this thread was going to be about.

But of course,

I’m talking about ‘brownies’, not “brownies”.

I got kicked out of Cub Scouts for eating brownies.

One would hope so.

One of my friends is calling the school. Don’t know if she will get an answer.

I heard of a grade school teacher that made her students remove the labels from the black crayons the students brought to school. She did not like the fact the crayons listed the color black in 3 languages, English, Spanish and French. The Spanish word for black is negro.

I read 6 different articles and none of them said what was actually said that was the hate crime that led to the police being called.

So I can only conclude that it was something completely innocuous and the child/teacher that complained is themselves a racist and was just looking for any reason to be offended so they could call someone else a racist. Fucking SJWs.

When I was in school, one of my friends called me a cabbage roll in German. I found that hysterically funny and we giggled uncontrollably until the teacher told us to knock it off. I don’t recall the police being called, but maybe not all food products are considered equally racist.

See, I interpreted it as the kid saying something actually really shitty and actually racist and his parents defended it like “oh, he was just talking about the dessert!”

I found the lack of information about what was said a bit baffling, too. I didn’t come to the “totally innocuous” conclusion, though. I suspect if it were totally innocuous, it would have been reported, because media loves these hyper-PC over-reaction stories. I think, at best, we simply don’t know and it’s just been a bunch of lazy journalism copying one story after another, as the story seems exactly the same across media outlets. It all just screams shitty reporting to me.

This is going to cause a lot of problems in New York City where the traffic police are known as Brownies because of their brown uniforms (which they hate because it makes them readily identifiable as traffic police, the most loathsome denizens of the Big Apple).

Pleased to hear that New Jersey’s police resources are finally being used judiciously. I can only assume this indicates that the entire State of New Jersey is completely out of real problems.
.

This appears to be the original article. It sounds like the school district has implemented an ultra-zero tolerance policy, where not only do any accusations of racism have to be looked into, they’re supposed to call the police and report them to social services as well. That’s what the philly.com article is focusing on, not whether or not anyone really thought ‘brownie’ was racist, but the mere fact another student thought it was meant the school was required to get the police involved. In that article, the district seems to be backpedaling on that requirement:

I’ll bet there’s more to this story, and we’ll never find out the rest of it because the school won’t be allowed to go into detail. It’s hard to believe multiple people would agree to take action over a kid talking about snacks.

Now any student who wants to get someone else in trouble can claim they heard something racist, and the cops will come. This is a disservice to REAL incidents of racism or anything else where there has to be an intervention.

I have major suspicions as well. Notice how the article repeatedly emphasizes that it’s reporting what “allegedly” happened “according to” somebody else. That’s usually a sign that the writer doesn’t believe his sources are telling the truth.
