No more wisdom teeth!

I just had my wisdom teeth out this morning.

It really wasn’t so bad. I had general anasthsia. One minute they were poking me with needles, the next I was on a chair with them saying the surgery went fim. Now the bleeding has mostly stopped, I’m in a little pain, and my lip is numb. But for the most part I’m awake and doing fine.

Does anyone know what drug they gave me for anastesia. They said it “might tingle”, and it hurt pretty bad throughout my chest and then immediately put me out.

Congrats!
I couldn’t tell you what they gave you - I had local and was awake the whole time they were prodding. Did you have an impacted one? That’s usually the reason they put you under. Anyway, I’m sure some Doper will come along with more knowledge than me.

Did you ask to have your teeth? I sure did. Still got them - I had all four removed together, so they’re neatly stored away. Just wanted to have them!

Yep, I got my teeth! They are huge!

IT HURTS!

Woke up this morning at 5AM with lots of pain and blood everywhere- in my vicodin haze I’d forgotten to be careful about the sheets and pillows.

Is it possible for dry socket to show up the same day? I’ve only one of my wounds hurt and it feels like a toothache. Ow ow ow ow ow.

When I had my wisdom teeth pulled (many moons ago), I used tea bags to stop the bleeding and ease the pain. It sounds weird but it really worked. I guess tea has astringent qualities, it helps absorb the blood, and it will keep you from “sucking the sockets” (it sounds weird, but it’s almost impossible to get the blood out of your mouth without sucking - yes, I know how weird that sounds).

If you go with the tea bags, get them well saturated with water then squeeze them out. Pop on in on each side and pop a Vike. Good luck and feel better.

And don’t forget to post if you get bone shards erupting through your gums next week! :eek

And yet again, I’m put off from having anything done with mine. shudder

Honestly it’s really not that bad. This is the first sign of pain I’ve had, and it’s already gone. Heck, the injection of anesthetic was probably the most painful part of this whole experience. The surgery was absolutely nothing- it took half an hour and I was walking around right afterwards, able to go to the store, mail a letter, etc. It was almost worth it just to spend two days off work laying in bed in a vicodin haze eating ice cream.

The mention of “bone shards” just had me recoiling … sigh Yeah, yeah, I’ll quit being a wuss someday. When I can’t take the intermittent pain anymore, probably.

Sigh…another thread in which I grow envious of the OP for having those pesky wisdom’s removed. I have decided every year it’s time, and every year I get smacked down. This year it was the estimate for $7000 worth of dental work that my husband needs. He will most like forego that and just throw in the towel and get dentures, but that’s still pricey. Once again my wisdom teeth move to the back of the line. :frowning:

Oh, but I’m happy for you even sven

Congrats on getting your wisdom teeth out.

I, however, beat you to it. I had mine out a little over a week ago. To give you a heads up, the only time I needed to take the pain meds was in the morning right after I woke up. Half hour after taking my lovely little pill, I was doing fine. I think it is because I sleep on my side, maybe that is the reason your hurting as well. Either way, it only lasted a few mornings. Within a few days you should be nice and painfree.

Oh, God, you’re all so much braver than I could ever be. I plan to run and hide from any kind of dental surgery as long as humanly possible…

I’m not brave- the only reason I did this was I need to in order for them to send me to the Peace Corps (Cameroon…June 14th!). If they didn’t require it, my teethies would still be nice and happy in my gums.

Have you checked out local dental schools? I managed to get dental insurance two days before my surgery and was able to go to a private dentist. But I got my previous work done at a dental school and it was quite affordable- while my private dentist charged $1,800 for the procedure (I think general anestesia bumps up the price) the dental school quoted me $800- and my dental school was one of the expensive ones. Plus, although it takes longer you are guaranteed to get good work- several teachers will likely watch and review the work and everyone works extra hard to do a good job.

I’ve also heard of lots of studies looking for people getting their wisdom teeth out- I guess it’s a popular way to test pain killers. All you do is take their pain killers, and they give you a few hundred dollars or pay for the procedure. I’m sure you local dental school would know the most about that.

I remember when I had my wisdom teeth out. I was seventeen and I spent the whole weekend after stoned off my mind listening to music, eating ice cream, and dicking around on the internet.very similar to most weekends when I was seventeen

Rubbish. It doesn’t necessarily have to be that big of a deal.

Mine, however, were not impacted. If yours are impacted, don’t listen to me.

But I had mine taken out on a Thurday, with a local anesthetic. I was 17. I felt the original needle. After that all I felt was pressure. There was a lot of blood, but I felt no pain.
My mouth was numb for hours on Thursday. Doc gave me some Tolectin (painkiller) and told me to call him if it got worse.
I took that Friday off from school. There was some pain, I took Tolectin, and it went away. Same thing Saturday.
By Satruday the swelling was down and by Sunday almost completely gone. I went back to school on Monday with no problem.

He told me that there was a small chance they may grow back, as I was fairly young when they first came in (14 at first appearance). Never happened.

On the bottom my gums grew in to fill the gap. On the top I have tiny gaps on both sides. They do not bother me.

They never bothered me again, as a matter of fact. And they hurt so much beforehand that it was an extraordinary relief to get them out. I had all four taken out at once, as my mouth was too small. I’m lucky enough to never have had braces…I have exactly one tooth that’s off-kilter, and that was caused by good ol’ wisdom teeth pushing at them.

Even if you have an impacted tooth, the extraction isn’t necessarily terrible. I had my three remaining wisdom teeth pulled about six weeks ago (I’d gotten the bottom right tooth pulled four years earlier). The bottom left tooth was impacted. I had local anesthesia, and it wasn’t bad at all. The vicodin took care of the pain in the first 24 hours. By the second day I’d switched to Tylenol.

It’s my understanding that IV sedation is meant to alleviate anxiety, and that you still have to get a local anesthetic for the extraction. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong about that.

Congrats on getting your wisdom teeth out, even sven. (Is it just me, or have quite a few Dopers had this done lately?)

All four of mine were impacted, though not all that badly (they still got them out whole).

Once again, the surgery was absolutely not scary. General anastesia is a little overboard in most people’s opinions, but all the dentist’s I talked to recommended it for me since I am so very nervous around dentists. It was not the “twilight sleep” most dentists recommend, but rather full-on unconsciousness. Once again it was quick, I woke up immediately afterwards, and it was no problem at all. There is always an element of risk to general anastesia, but in my case I think it was a good choice.

It still hurts, but not badly, just very achey. I’m still glad I have vicodin. I can’t eat well and that’s making me pretty weak- even milkshakes I have to kind of let trickle down my throat. But I’m more bored than anything else.

Humm … When I had my Wisdom teeth removed, around 15 years ago, the dentist
used some kind of anesthetic to numb my gums before injecting the Novocain. He
put the anesthetic on Q-tips, applied that to the locations on my gums where he would be injecting the Novocain.

I went through the whole procedure with just the Novocain … all four …they
weren’t impacted.

I don’t know why anyone needs to feel the shot of Novocain or what ever anasthetic with that Q-tip method.

I’ve had another dental procedure since that required Novocain and the
dentist (a different one) used the same Q-tip method!

This was an IV through my arm. I’m guessing it was Propofol, which causes pain in most patients. It hurt like a bitch. The anastesiaologist said “this will tingle, but it will pass.” Then he did it and I was clearly looking up at him like “what the hell did you just do to me” because my whole chest felt like it was on fire from the inside. He looked at me and said “I’m sorry” and then I kept waiting for the pain to pass- then next thing I know I was awake and fine.

My oral surgeon did the same thing. I felt one or two of the injections (and he told me in advance that I would), but the rest were painless.

I hope you’re feeling better today, even sven. In another few days you should be back to normal.
