No, no, please no: Tebow

Yeah, except for Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, Sam Bradford last year…

True, but Newton is a freak and Dalton has AJ Green and a strong offensive line. Tebow has no receivers and no offensive line.

The point is that you really can’t make any assumptions about how a player will do in the future until at least a full season in.

Plus, Tebow’s performance last weekend went way beyond “suck”. We’re talking “historically bad”. ESPN’s QBR page noted:

  1. Not all rookie QBs suck.
  2. Tebow’s not a rookie.
  3. No, seriously, Tebow sucks. The question is: can he get better? I doubt it because his issue is not simply making bad reads. There is a mechanical problem with his throwing motion that does not work in the NFL today. He will get stripped, sacked and intercepted as long as he throws the way he does.

All that crap we heard about his “working on” his throwing motion in camps before the draft, I think it was all crap. He didn’t make a single change.

Athletic? Amazingly so. NFL QB? Never was even close to qualified, imho.

If he hadn’t been taken in the 1st round, I keep looking at some players Denver could have taken before picking Tebow in a later round:

Jahvid Best - RB

Rob Gronkowski - TE

Jimmy Clausen - QB

Ben Tate - RB

Colt McCoy - QB

That’s just a quick look at some offense players thru the first three rounds. I’m not even looking at some of the O-line and D-line players that could’ve been picked up. I don’t hate Tebow, I just don’t see why he was the Bronco Messiah.

I don’t think anyone disagrees that he was a reach in the first round, if for no other reason than he would still have been there in the second and probably the third.

Yeah, I just was trying to get back to talking about his NFL suckitude instead of his religious or political views.

I watched only the hightlights from that last game and I thought how it must be hard to stay in the pocket when there ain’t no gorram pocket.

I saw the pass rush cut through the protection like a hot knife through butter.

I thought maybe Tebow should run more, if only for life.

Maybe Tebow isn’t the answer, but one of the questions has to be ‘Can these guys block at all?’

Well, there’s an old axiom in boxing: you can change a man’s style in the gym, but the first time he gets punched in the mouth, that goes out the window.

I think Tebow HAS tried hard to change his style. He just hasn’t succeeded. That’s partly because, when protection breaks down and you’re running for your life, you don’t THINK- you let instinct take over.

It’s easy to throw a new way on the practice field, but it’s harder to maintain composure and do things the new way under pressure. A poised professional NFL quarterback tries to stay cool and make reads and smart decisions under pressure. Too often, Tebow (like a LOT of mobile quarterbacks) stops trying to read coverage and takes off running at the first sign of trouble.

Which could be why Elway likes him. That guy used to really get me stressed out when he would back up 15 yards, then run 14.99 to 15.01 yards to the line before throwing. Arrgggh!

Of course, Elway had a good arm.

6-16 for 48 yards in the first half at Oakland. He does have a TD, along with at least three “WTF?” passes, one of which went ten feet over the open receivers head.

Having Willis McGahee rack up all that yardage (&TDs) sure helps Tebow’s scrambling and wildcat stuff look good. His passing is still a joke.

most def. He has the longest throwing motion in history.

They won though, good on Denver…and now only one game out of the division lead.

Well, if this game is the first of him being a mini-Vick, I’ll eat my earlier words. I still think he can’t be the Bronco QB for the long term unless he learns how to pass.

I know how hard it is to change motions, too. (Anecdotal) I played HS ftbl. When trying out, they put me thru all the positions. I ended up LB and ST (faster than the big guys, bigger than the fast guys). Later, in practices, I had to play QB from time to time. I’m ambidextrous. I feel better throwing lefty, and was very accurate, but my motion was more of a side arm (think Ken Stabler-esque). To get the “proper” form, I had to go righty. Distance improved, but accuracy was gone. It was hard to get used to. But then again, I didn’t really have to, being defense and special teams.

Now, go all the way past 4A HS ftbl, thru NCAA FBS, and into the pros. Surely he’s had the coaching and trainers available to help. Maybe he didn’t really need to change until now. But, my point, he needs to. If he can’t … well… Not every game will be full of Raiders’ penalties and screw ups.
.

I wasn’t under the impression that Elway likes him. If he did, he’d have pushed for him to start several games sooner. He says kind things about him to the press, but that’s his job. I’ve not seen him gush over Tebow or anything.

I was being facetious about the scrambling.
