"No onions" lentil soup

Hi All,

So I am one of those people who CANNOT eat onions but I can absolutely eat Garlic & I love it toasted, fried, Powder, Fresh & it does make up for NOT using onions! My ma realized one day why I couldn’t eat several of her meats & dishes, Onions. She said “why didn’t you tell me,” well Ma Kelly, Laura, & dad eat it and I am the only one…she said well I can make a serving for you without onions!! She did look into it (she’s was a Nurse, God rest her soul) with our family doctor who knew her well & apparently when she was pregnant with me she took a certain medication to assist with morning sickness that likely affected me with the No Way, No How, Just No to onions!!! I was the first born and the meds for morning sickness evolved, therefore my sisters did not have the same aversion to onions, I have met approximately a dozen people all over the world who have the same issue as I do & they to use garlic in place of onions in all recipes and nobody who eats with them complains, and if there is one who absolutely has to have onions they bring them with them already cut up and ready as a SIDE. You see I can’t even be around the smell of onions or I gag, or I visit the toilet to talk and it isn’t pleasant. It was intimated that perhaps scallions or other onion substitutes would work; NO, I simply cannot eat any form of onions & yes I have had people (people who thought they were helping me) try and sneak onions in something they thought the onions would be disguised but I could see & smell them, Thank goodness or I would of been very sick. So if you meet someone out there who tells you they are allergic to onions believe them, and Never try to trick them, ever, respect their allergy as you would a child allergic to peanut butter.

Adding other spices to dishes where onion is required will be yummy for everybody, it doesn’t just have to be garlic! I use smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, The Keg Seasoning for Beef or the Chicken & Rib seasoning, I experiment a lot and I am always pleasantly surprised and WOWED by how tasty my meals are, I even on occasion spice up my over hard eggs!!!

I hope you people wary of the ‘onion’ notion read this.

Cheers

Many people can’t tolerate onions, as you can see by reading this thread. Attributing it to “a certain medication to assist with morning sickness” appears to have no basis in reality.

Per your suggestion and the sausage, did the OP ask about using any pork products?

don’t forget fajitas

does your sausage contain pork? You might want to ask about that?

Who the heck are you to say so??? I tend to believe my mom, thanks!

I love Maggi, but I know it as a salty, pungent liquid additive.

It comes in POWDER ?!? I would freebase that stuff like cocaine - the liquid is my go-to to gently sip tiny amounts when I’m feeling ill.

Yes?

This was a couple years ago, but the soups were a success! Served alongside salad and herbed cheese buttermilk biscuits. I and many other folks got a scoop of each kind of soup for the best of both worlds; but folks with dietary restrictions were able to stick to one or the other. The Italian sausage we used was heavily fennellish, which made the meaty soup sufficiently fragrant.

Depends on where you are:

Maggi is used all over the world. In Africa and the Middle East, it’s primarily used in cube form. There are nine different formulations that vary among nations and regions, depending on local preferences and cuisine.
