No Oreos For You!

True – but the issue is, just how much of the total fat in one serving consists of trans fat? Ingredient lists aren’t required to give you proportions, they’re just required to list the ingredients in descending order of quantity.

Right now, FDA regs require each food product’s Nutrition Facts label to list the grams of total fat and the grams of saturted fat in one serving. Nutrition Facts labels are also allowed to disclose the amount of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat in one serving, but are not required to. Nutrition Facts labels may not stipulate grams of trans fat under the current rules (although the manufacturer is free to disclose the trans fat content elsewhere on the food label).

A proposed rule that’s been under consideration by the FDA since the year 2000 would require grams of trans fat to be included in the listing of grams of saturated fat, with a double asterisk (**) leading to a footnote that says how much of the saturated fat is actually trans fat.

Food producers, of course, have opposed this proposed rule, which is why it still hasn’t gone into effect.

I’d take freakin’ warning stickers on my cookie and cracker packages over having them banned entirely! They haven’t even taken cigarettes off the market entirely. WTF!!! What else is he going to try to take off the shelves? Margerine? His organization is dedicated to banning trans fat, I have to assume he means it all. Grrrrrr…   What the hell gives him the right to decide what the rest of us can purchase to put in our mouths! That’s pretty damned arrogant.

In which case, they’d have to ban most meat and dairy products, because those also contain small amounts of naturally-occurring trans fat.

Aha, that’s it! He’s a vegan in disguise!

As a matter of fact, NO!

I’ve been aware of how poisonous trans-fat is for over thirty years. It is why I have always eaten butter. It is specifically why I have avoided McDonald’s facsimile food for almost twenty years. My stepmother was absolutely phobic about butter. She always ate oleo margerine and had a heart attack at 37 years of age.

Now there’s a shocker.

A good balanced diet is something few seem to understand the makings of now. Moderation also is something few seem to grasp either.

I eat a reasonablly healthful diet, but dammit, if I want Oreos, (cause they’re on sale, of course) what gives this guy the right to tell me I can’t eat them at all? That strikes me as pretty intrusive.

I looked at the article on CNN.com, had a sudden craving for the cookies, and ate three while reading the article.

Of course it is ridiculous that she tried to ban aspartame from the campus–but why do you doubt that it really did give her a headache? It gives me a headache. I wish I could decide that it didn’t give me a headache any more.

In other news, my husband accidentally bought mint Oreos. Ick. Now, I’d support a ban on mint Oreos.

I don’t really get the point of this lawsuit. Oreos aren’t good for you. No shit. If you don’t eat too many of them, there won’t be a problem.

I don’t really like Oreos, and haven’t eaten them for many years, but shit like this makes me want to eat one.

So you support frivilous lawsuits, because of their potential PR value? And you don’t think this is an abuse of the legal system?

I’ve never been able to eat margarine, because I can’t bear the taste. You can taste it through tuna, for god’s sake. Bleuurggh.

It’s been recently satisfying to me to see increasing amounts of information - such as you mention - about why margarine is not a magic, lovely health food. And ditto: I wouldn’t touch McD with a bargepole, the smell walking past makes me feel quite sick.

God, I’m thinking about the taste of margarine now, and feeling quite nauseous…

That all said, I grew up watching all those Flora ads, and feeling bad that I couldn’t bear the taste of what was apparently a wondrous, miracle product. You are lucky to have been aware of the truth for so long. I consider myself reasonably well informed, yet I am always reading and learning new stuff. Pity then the less educated, the more ignorant, those that don’t read health or science articles: how will they ever learn what they are really eating/feeding their children?

He’s full of something alright! I just don’t think it’s only the fat.

You may actually be the only one.

I, personally, think it’s wrong to make Nabisco spend a boatload of money defending it’s self against a lawsuit to make us think. If it took a lawsuit, thinking wasn’t your strong suit to start with. If you eat a bunch of junk and become fat and unhealthy, then that is your own fault and your own problem.

The Master speaks on aspartame:

Mmmmm, mint Oreos! They’re like those Mystic Mint cookies, except without the fudge icing. Nummy!

istara, you aren’t the only one. However, I’m realizing how much trans fat I’m NOT consuming. Since the beginning of May, I’ve been on a kick to eat healthier all throughout the summer. My diet consists of, basically, water, a multivitamin, lean meats, veggies, fruit, whole-wheat bread, fish, and the occasional low-fat cheese. Except for the cheese and meat, not a whole lot of trans fat going on. But even when I did eat nothing but McDonalds, candy, and Oreos I did not gain weight because I was active. Anyone can have trans fat sometimes, as long as it’s balanced with their diet and in moderation, and being active doesn’t hurt.

It looks like our whiny little lawyer friend Stephen Joseph has dropped his suit against Nabisco:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2003/05/14/state1814EDT0162.DTL

He says it’s because, quote, “at the time the lawsuit was filed nobody knew about trans fat. Now everybody knows about trans fat.” That’s right, he, and he alone, has single-handedly educated the entire world population about trans fatty acids, and absolutely no one had ever heard of them before now.

More likely he read a few message boards, and decided that it wasn’t worth “taking the heat” for anymore. Smart move, he outraged me with his arrogance.

WHY ARE TYHERE NO LATINO oreos? BECAUSE bill clinton HAS STOLEN all the MEXICANS with the PLEADIANS!

I realize, that I’ll be walking right into I Scream In Darkness’ clever trap, in posting this, however. It seems to me that someone is intoxicated or something. He’s posting this stuff, with slight variations all over SDMB. Link

Pssst, hey I Scream In Darkness, you ok? Maybe you should go lie down a while. And lay off of whatever it is you had a bit ago too. On second thoughts, after seeing some of your other posts, get psychiatric help right away!

I wonder if Phillip Morris, or whatever they’re called now (Atria?), can countersue this goat-felching, mother-whoring, used cum recepticle for wasting their time with a baseless suit, even though it was dropped.

I have a health problem where I can’t eat meat. I’m going to sue to keep meat out of the grocery.

All “not milk” sites will blame the milk that’s drunk while eating the cookies, not the cookies themselves. One of them actually stated it was “better to give your child de-alcoholized beer than milk.”

Wouldn’t “OREO NAZI” be a great Internet name?
