No screaming on The Screamer, please

Seems you can’t scream while riding a roller coaster called called The Screamer…

It’s official. The terrorists have won.

Nothing I hate more than people who move into an area around an attraction like that and then complain about the attraction. How utterly moronic can a person get?

Lame. That’s like the people that buy a house adjacent to an airport and then complain about the noise of the airplanes.

It also sounds like the town needs some better zoning ordinances. Building amusement parks on top of residential homes or building residential homes on top of an amusement park is just dumb to begin with.

It reminds me of the killjoys who moved into the same neighborhood as one of the high schools here, then hounded the poor principal on football game nights about the noise.

In other news, common sense was declared dead today. The sense’s age was unknown.

Pardon me, but the people making the complaints didn’t move in next to the ride. The ride moved in next to them. Quoth the article:

So unless they all moved in a week after the ride opened and managed to get the rule in place within two weeks, it’s the poor zoning of the amusement park that’s at fault here.

Yes, but they moved in wall after the amusement park had been built. Were they surprised that an amusement park emitted lights and noise?

That town needs to read zoning 101.

From what I found online the place is a batting cages/mini-golf/bumper boats/arcade place. This thrill ride is something new and on it seems like it’s on a different scale to what the place alread had.

I’m going with the neighbors on this one.

The park has been open since 1977, I would think they would have noticed the park by now. It seems like a hoax to me, notice how they don’t name the park, when I found the parks web page they don’t say anything about it. The FAA requirments seem strange too, I’ve always been told that you don’t have to so anything for objects that are under 200 feet, plus what good does it do to put lights on something that moves.

I don’t think MSNBC does hoax articles. They did name the park; it’s called Scandia Family Fun Center. There is a possibility that the residents didn’t know what they were in for. There are a couple Scandia Fun Centers around here. They’re pretty small; I wouldn’t even call them amusement parks - more like miniature golf places. Maybe this is the first big ride they’ve built.

The complaints do seem rather silly, but I’d note that kids can get pretty over-the-top with the screaming. I’ve gone on rides where kids just shriek and shriek and shriek for the entire ride, sometimes before the ride even starts. The article tried to downplay it, but if it’s anything like what I hear from those types of rides, it’s probably pretty noisy.

Oh, and I’ve definitely seen lights on tall rides. They put the lights on the stationary part, not on the moving parts.

There’s got to be somthing else here. Some threats, some bribes, a lawsuit, something. I just cannot fathom the amusement park complying with such an outrageous request just because they asked. Is there some noise ordinance they’re breaking? I could understand that. If they’re not doing anything illegal, why are they responding with anything other than a “tough luck, buddy”?

Maybe there’s a noise ordinance, and their decision to build a huge thrill ride was ill-conceived?

If there was that seems like it would have been a relevant point to bring up in the article. So… bad journalism, or im just still confused.

Sadly, bad journalism is the norm these days. If the owners enacted the policy simply out of the goodness of their hearts, that would have been a relevant point as well. The article didn’t specify either way, and I suspect there’s a good reason for having to take such Draconian measures.

By the way, I missed where it said the lights were on the rotating arms, so everyone please ignore my earlier misstatement.

Please cover your mouthwhile falling 16 stories at 60 mph if you feel you may scream.
As if anyone has that on their mind during that.

I’m confused about how you get pulled off the ride for screaming. They have to stop the ride, pull you off and restart the ride??? Hrm?

On the other hand, seeing the expression “Bag it” for the first time in years brings back some memories.

They should re-name it The Silent Scream! There can be a certain thrill to restraining the urget to scream. Anyone that has ever had sex in their parent’s house knows this.

From the linked article-

A 12-lane freeway… and you can still hear the kids… uh huh…

I think that this must be the place.
