Emo’s got nothing to do with Shoegazing. Morrissey doesn’t either, really… Shoegazing was pretty much the direct result of My Bloody Valentine’s last two albums (1988’s Isn’t Anything and 1990’s Loveless) and if it has a grandfather it’s Jim or William Reed from the Jesus and Mary Chain. Or perhaps A.R. Kane.

Emo started as a DC Hardcore thing, American punk rock, and I’m pretty sure it was in full swing before Shoegazing, which kicked off around 1989 and burned bright until about 1993 at which point it settled into a cozy subgenre because the first wave of UK Shoegazing bands (Pale Saints, Lush, Ride, Slowdive, Moose, Revolver, Chapterhouse) had all undergone drastic changes in sound or broken up.
