Here it is almost 24 hours after the season premiere and no one’s started a thread? It bodes ill indeed when the entire Doper community lets a new Simpsons ep go by without comment.
I thought the ep started out strong, with the t-shirt mania. This is my favorite style of ep, with it starting out seemingly on one topic and then derailing into another plot 1/3 or 1/2 way through.
The stuff with Homer’s mom was largely a rehash of her previous visit, what with Homer’s regressing (even more than usual) to childhood in her presence. I wonder what changed with Wiggum that he took her in this time instead of letting her go in gratitude for curing his asthma.
Meh. Nothing really jumps out about the ep. I give it a 6/10.
My second job puts me around a lot of people in the Disney fan community. In the episode (I didn’t see it), there is a Disney joke (something about hiding mom where there are no people for miles around: Disney’s California Adventure).
This has been playing big in that group. But how did is play for those who aren’t such Disney fans. Were you even aware of what it meant?
Not to mention that, despite any official designation, as usual (because of the World Series) the Halloween show was the season premiere (i.e. the first new episode) and that was last week…
I think bringing Mother Simpson really diminished the impact of her previous appearance. Her first appearance was one of the most touching episodes of the show ever. Homer learns that his mother is alive and loves him, but she can’t see him. Now, she just shows up again.
I think the first Mother Simpson episode also hits people who have lost their mothers (like me) more than others.
More like: What the hell is wrong with the Simpsons? But… we’ve already covered that extensively.
This was a “meh” ep for me: I’ll watch stuff like this, but I’m not overly excited about it. The fact that I can’t put my finger on exactly why it underwhelms me suggests that maybe I’m just jaded, tired of the whole premise. I’m still trying to give it a chance though.
I actually did get that one, even though I live in New Mexico and avoid Disney like the plague.
Being a parent, I am forced (by law, I believe) to take my children to a Disney amusement park once in their lifetimes. We did some research before choosing Disneyland, and I was warned off California Adventure by every single person I spoke to. Not only that, but my brother was visiting last week, and he mentioned that he’d gone to California Adventure because it looked less crowded than Disneyland, and that he immediately found out why it’s less crowded. So the joke may have a wider appeal than you might think.
As usual, I found the episode underwhelming with a few amusing lines and sight gags.
The Beutiful Mind references were amusing, if somewhat predictible.
There’s still air in the bus so for the next few minutes this is a rescue operation…a salvage operation…I’ll see you all tomorrow at 10:00.
The Homer and his mom scenes were touching but I found them remeniscent of the (funnier) episode where Bart taught Homer to ride a motorcycle (and the bike ends up in the roof).
An ok episode, nothing too special. I did love how Homer’s far-fetched bridge underpass theory was actually correct. After last week’s stellar episode it was a bit of a let down, but any new Simpsons is still good for me.
At the end of the previous Mother Simpson episode, Homer sits on his car and watches the stars for hours. It was a fitting conclusion to that episode … and now she’s back, for more wacky adventures! Oh, will the wackiness never stop with Mother Simpson around?
I liked the first two acts but disliked intensely the ‘reset’ button pushed at the end. Of course, Burns is soooo eeeeevil that he makes her go on the run again! Of course, he influences the courts to incarcerate her for something that should be laughed out of the courthouse! Of course, Homer is left pining for a woman that he doesn’t know is alive or dead!
I wouldn’t want Mother S around all the time, but there was no need to bring her back if her situation isn’t allowed to change.
Maybe the show is finally steering in another direction, away from “wacky” episodes that end up being spectacularly unfunny, back to more true-to-life adventures.
Mehitabel, the reset button is a common occurrence, both in the Simpsons and in other sit-coms. Everything has to go back to the way it was, and without discussion, under penalty of torture.
Oh yeah, I know they have to reset, but they did it with one of the most perfect and emotionally satisfying stories they’d ever done. grumble grumble grumble
Oh well. I don’t want to be tortured so I won’t worry about it.
I anxiously awaited the new episode and watched it with someone else who is a hardcore fan like myself. We were both pretty disappointed and didn’t laugh very much. I really hope that the season improves. Did the show “jump the shark” without my noticing?
