Slug’s illustration in this week’s NYPress version of TSD has been replaced! Is this common practice at other papers? I always assumed the illustration and text were a package deal.
No, subscribing newspapers can purchase them separately. If they don’t pick up the illustration they do take a chance that once in a while the column won’t make any sense, but I guess they take that chance regardless.

So, do any papers ever buy the illustration without the column? Now, that would be interesting.
Or how about a Slug calendar? All you would need are the questions that prompted the column. Might be a great way to promote Cecil’s books, with a reference to the volume and page on which the corresponding column is located.
