The AZ Wildcats episode was new last night, wasn’t it? I don’t remember seeing it before. Or did everyone think the rooms were both so hideous as to go without comment?
it was a new show. i was looking for the thread earlier. thanks otto!
i liked edward’s room. the colours he used are not my favorites but the room came together soooo very well. the curtains were amazing. i love the way he kept the red stripe going.
gen’s room was good. i thought the white was a bit stark, and that the blue cushions (which i admired in urban outfitters on friday) would have done better in the yellow. that would be all i would change. it was quite the spicy room.
I have to confess, I spent large portions of the ep thinking “they are never getting their security deposits back.” I have to wonder what the point is of making over rooms in rental properties. Especially for college students. They are going to most likely be living in those rooms for at most another three years, and then what? Will the landlords keep the designs? Will the roommates battle over who gets to keep the custom furniture and pilows?
I liked the colors in Edward’s room. Everybody was griping about the “pink” paint and I guess the color settings on my TV are off because the paint never looked pink to me. It looked magenta. It did look red after it fried, though. Not sure about the big circle design on the wall. Sort of reminds me of something you’de see on a t-shirt with the reversed colors. I’m not a big fan of continuing wall patterns on to curtains but I didn’t hate it or anything.
Gen’s room was also good except once again I have to think fire hazard with all that material. I wasn’t sure about the stripe running around the room but there did need to be something breaking up the wall color.
Carter Oosterhouse Porn Star Quote Of The Week is the exchange between Gen and Ty, paraphrased:
“Six inches is kind of little. You want nine inches?”
“I can take nine inches.”
Even they knew it sounded completely dirty.
I only got to see a bit of the Wildcats episode, since I was catching it in the midnight rerun, but I did see them start to put the red up- yikes. And… Gen cleavage!! Mmmm.
I did get to see the two eps leading up to it- also college remakes, though sorority/frat houses- and they were both new to me. Thought the frat house was… uhhhh… ergh. Too much. But Doug throwing the couch out the window was amusing. All three of the sorority remakes were nice, and I have to say I was extremely impressed with Frank’s freehand artwork over the niche in the “European cafe” house. He should do WAY more of that, and WAY less of the kitchy crap.
Mr. Kitty keeps insisting Doug is gay… is there any info either way on that?
Dang you! I only came in here to post that, heh.
I thought while Gen’s bar came out better, her room overall looked like crap. Everything looked really half-assed. I thought it was going to be cool like Hildi’s circus tent room. The etching looked crappy too, because the stencils were so poorly done.
Edward’s room had a sort of 1970s roller-rink feel with that wall graphic, but I think the end result was pretty good. An interesting improvement at any rate.
I believe I remember hearing that Doug is divorced; so he was married to a woman at some point, but that of course means nothing. My personal opinion is he’s having a thing with Paige.
Paige is a newlywed, so scratch that notion.
No she’s not, she was married like 2 years ago.
Okay, but she’s still married, so I can’t see her having a fling with Doug.
Vern maybe, but Doug? Please.
I dunno, Ivy… would Vern be willing to pour himself into leather pants? Maybe Paige has a soft spot for such… brazenness (or midlife-crisisness, whichever).
Hmmm… Vern. Leather. Must… go… lay… down… now…
Yeah, Gen’s 9-inch joke was pretty amusing.
I thought Edward’s room was wildly creative, and I liked the result. He is probably the best at being flexible to each HO’s situation and listening to and incorporating HO input in ways that don’t suck. Otto it is very highly likely that the production crew got a signed release from the property owner prior to agreeing to do the show for liability and release purposes. It would be close to the one which the regular HO’s sign. The show is 100% free publicity, any canny owner would happily sign off.
I had a shocking thought when watching on Saturday night- Edward may be more talented then Vern. I know I was shocked too. But my thought was this- I love Vern’s style quite a bit. But, he very rarely strays from it (it does happen- but not too often). Additionally, some of his “bargins” do not pass the sniff test (its great for the HO’s, but you would not be able to replicate some of them- trust me). I always feel Edward’s deals are more legit.
Having watched this year, I have really liked Vern’s stuff. But I have been amazed at the range and creativity of Edward’s designs. If he is not currently the best designer on the show, he certainly is close and definitely is second.
My Rankings:
- Vern
- Edward
good size gap
- Laurie
- Frank
smaller gap.
- Doug
- Hildy
- Texas designer
massive gap
- the horror which cannot be named.

I agree with you on Edward vs. Vern. While Vern always, always has a stellar looking room, he is not as willing to bend his style to the homeowner’s so much; nor do I think his steals and deals are 100% legit. (I did chuckle though on a recent show - might’ve been an episode of Trading Spaces Family - where he admitted he didn’t include the apples in his budget because he actually stole them from the lobby of his hotel - ::SNORK!:
I’m standing by my Paige/Doug theory. Watch the episode where Doug paints the bedroom with various green squares (and fights with the homeowner about the bed placement for hours) and see if there aren’t more than a few looks between them that make you say “geez, get a room…again!” The pre-reveal interview is especially bad.
I consider Vern asexual, because I assume he would consider the act a non-productive use of time; possibly too messy and most certainly likely to misalign the bed.
