No undo on federal regulations after Unabomber catch and Anthrax deaths?

The question about the Unabomber below and recent reports of pond draining by the FBI got me thinking …

I use the postal service a lot. A whole heck of a lot. Unless I need to send a package … and then rather than send out little packages to friends, I save it up and send one big package when I get around to it.

This makes the follow through on many promises of packages very late.

When I was a kid, my pen pal and I traded packages nearly every week. Video tapes, movies, books, audio tapes, letters written completely on adding machine tape … it was easy to send packages as I’d weigh it, apply postage, and drop it in a letter box.

Now adays, I can’t do that. With the advent of the Unabomber, you can no longer mail packages over 16 oz or a certain size “unattended” … you have to go to the post office and hand it to them personally, or hand it to a postal employee on his/her rounds. Which has become more difficult as I’ve had to grow up and like work for a living during the day.

So … now that he’s been caught, is there any reason to keep the restriction? And even less now that its been proven that death can come in less than an ounce?

I haven’t thought about this before, so I can’t say I’ve formulated a position. But I suppose the counter to your arguments might be:

There’s no reason some other whacko couldn’t start committing similar crimes, and dropping the restriction might make it easier.

Anthrax is a titch hard to come by, and very hard to weaponize. It’s not as if we’re in danger of any schmuck who’s having a bad day running to the store, buying some anthrax, and mailing it to you.

He exposed a weakness in the system. Just because he’s caught doesn’t make the weakness disappear.
