"No video with supported format and MIME type found"

This always happens here when someone links to X (formerly known as Twitter), such as with smithsb’s post in this political thread:

The note comes replete with a sad piece of paper icon. Yet, if I click on it, I go to the X site and can view the video there just fine. Is this a Discourse thing, or what? What kind of plugin would I need to watch the videos here?

I think Muskdaddy just decided he didn’t want people to watch their videos elsewhere unless they use the native embed, which we can’t enable here because our admins are all MIA.

You can install this to block your referrers to X, hiding that you’re watching it from the SDMB. That will let the video play: Smart Referer Extension for Firefox

Before:

After:

Note that the extension hasn’t been updated in 7 years, and isn’t actively monitored. It might be malware, who knows.

You can have AI write you a simpler/safer extension (just tell it what’s going on, and tell it to strip the referer to twimg.com and other twitter domains).

Or you can add a new bookmark, and copy and paste this as the URL:

javascript:(()=>{const m=document.createElement('meta');m.name='referrer';m.content='no-referrer';document.head.append(m);document.querySelectorAll('video').forEach(v=>{const els=[v,...v.querySelectorAll('source')];if(els.some(e=>e.src?.includes('twimg.com'))){els.forEach(e=>e.referrerPolicy='no-referrer');v.load()}})})();

Like this:

Click that on a page and the video will work. It’s Javascript that unblocks the video by hiding the referrer for you.

It’s also desktop Firefox only. I do most of my SDMB’in on my phone, so the specific extension suggestion doesn’t help, although the idea is good.

I found an extension called “Referer Policy” which accomplishes the same thing on Firefox mobile.

Replying to myself to add after edit window closes: I can’t seem to find a configuration choice for this extension which will allow me to have both Twitter and Youtube embedded videos functioning at the same time, so I may just give Twitter a pass and remove the extension until something better comes along.

I’ll try to make one (an extension) that can fix Twitter and YouTube here. Anything else?
