No Zombie love? (Left 4 Dead)

I’m for adding more weapons, but I think they’ll have to alter the game play or make some kind of penalty for using them. A flamethrower would be completely overpowering unless it has a LONG recharge time or very limited ammunition. I was hoping for something like an axe or chainsaw, (or even a cricket bat!) to enjoy a little zombie bashing.

I could see adding situational weapons, like a grappling gun or something like that. Something that basically sticks you to your pistols except for the special situations that it could be used for.

The auto-shotgun is by far the best weapon in the game. No point adding more weapons since no one will use them.

Disagree. The hunting rifle is really fucking badass in crowds, moreso than the shotgun. I thought there was no use for the M-16 until I used it to shred through a Tank.

Taking anything other than the auto-shotgun (or normal shotgun at tier 1) is handicapping your team. The hunting rifle isn’t useful in close where all of the action that happens matters and the m16 won’t drop a tank like a auto-shotgun. Three people with auto-shotguns will kill a tank in literally 2 seconds. 243 damage per shot, no delay between shots. It’s just math.

I agree. I think it sucks, but the autoshotty is simply far better than anything else.

Especially once you get the 2nd pistol. Two pistols can drop non-horde zombies from a distance just about as fast as the M-16, and with about the same accuracy.

Now, if you know there won’t be a tank for the rest of the level, the other weapon’s usefulness becomes arguable as long as at least 1-2 people in the team have auto shotguns.

Okay then. Nevermind.

The main reason the autshotty is godly is simply that the range that 99%+ of the important action in the game takes place favors shotguns. The zombies that are a threat are right in front of you. There are limited opportunities here and there to take out a smoker at long range or something, but it’s not an immediate threat in the same way that 12 zombies a few feet from you are. Besides that, the smoker has to grab your teammate to be a threat, and if you’re watching out, you can melee them off before the smoker can hurt them. And barring that, whipping out a pistol, or especially double pistols, is good enough. You shouldn’t need a long ranged weapon to shoot a hunter off your teammate, you shouldn’t be that far from them.

The number of times a shotgun just annihilates a wave of 15 zombies coming your way is much more frequent and useful than the rare time you get to pick off a smoker from 200 feet.

The rifles are quicker at clearing the random non-moving infected, but that’s not a high priority thing, and you can just pick them off with pistols at your leisure.

The other issue is that the shotgun has way more effective ammo than the rifle. In practical situations, 128 shotgun shells can just kill way more zombies than the amount of uzi/m16 ammo they give you. If they halves shotgun ammo, they’d probably run out at about the same time.

The other two things are that the shotgun reloads ridiculously fast - you’re speedy gonzalez with your loading 10 rounds in 2 seconds bullshit. If they made shotgun loading significantly slower, the game would be more challenging, more realistic, and the shotgun wouldn’t be such a clear choice. But not only do you load at an inhuman rate, you can use melee between rounds.

Altogether it means that in pretty much every situation, the shotguns (and especially the autshotty) are just far better than any other weapons. It’s just not worth using anything else. I bet 4-autoshotty teams beat 2-shotty 2-rifle teams of the same skill in versus every time.

I think you discount the fact that rifle rounds go through normal Infected. When they’re lined up, I’m almost certain you can make it through three.

I like the shotty and I almost always use it. It’s even got too much range.

Advanced is a nightmare. You’ve really got to stick together. Also, Boomers hang around Witches, so when you kill the boomer, you piss off a bile-covered Witch, who WILL take you down. Also, Tanks easily tear through at least one teammate.

Yeah, I got to (I think) the second safe room on the hardest difficulty. You need human teammates and coordination. Going down the street in a phalanx should work (I think).

We just completed our first all-sdmb expert campaign (well, for the first 2 or 3 maps we only had 3 SDMBers, all sdmb for the last 2) - 6 restarts which isn’t too bad.

Normal is the last level you get through without working as a team. We’ve done one advanced campaign and we noticed immediately that if you have a rogue player you’re pretty much toast.

That’s awesome that SMDBers are tackling expert campaigns. Someday Cinn and I’ll be ready for that. Right now I’m still working on keeping the FF to a minimum. I got used to it having no effect in Normal/Versus and it’s a hard habit to break.

I also am dying to get a crack at making my own map. There are just so many scenarios that Cinn and I talk about “surviving the zombie apocalypse” that I think it’ll be blast to start making maps and running “What if’s”.

Something weird happened when i was playing the rooftop finale of No mercy. Three of us had gotten safely into the helicopter but the fourth player got swarmed on the helipad. We pretty much wrote him off when the tank appeared. The tank took one swing at the swarmed player and sent him flying… straight into the helicopter! Everybody survived.

I’m not so sure the computer knows how to walk past a Witch without giving her a kick on Expert. They also put Witches in the worst possible places.

Only yesterday was I finally able to get the achievement for not disturbing a witch throughout the entire campaign. You simply cannot do it with a bot as they will invariably rile her up. I think I’m up to 36 achievements completed out of 51. How is everyone else doing?

I don’t look at achievements, but I’m at 22.

I’ve got 30 achievements so far. I’m seriously lacking in the campaign completion ones. I’ve played every one to completion, just not in one continuous game. I have all but one of the versus achievements (Lamb 2 Slaughter). I guess I need to start playing campaigns more often now.

But versus is so much fun!

I’ve got 33 achievements. I keep trying to get the crownd one, but it always takes me 2 shots on that witch when I sneak up on her. Other than that… not sure what else I’m trying to get. The genocide one of course, but I’m only about half way for that. And to get through all 4 on expert. Just haven’t gotten around to that. It’s a hassle to fine good people for that. I want the tank one for all 4 dead too.

Most of the rest of them… man, I don’t see myself getting a lot of them. Not crazy enough to put forth the effort!

Acheivementwise, I’m missing the four expert campaign ones, never getting puked on, never using a health pack, and taking no damage during a finale. The boomer/healthpack one is basically impossible with the AI. The AI always gets boomered somewhere in a campaign. There’s some others, overall I think I’m at 650/1000.

I don’t like the autoshottie. Too much friendly fire. Whenever any of my teammates take an autoshotgun the amount of damage I take goes way up. But it’s my #1 weapon during finales where ff is less of an issue.

Expert completed on No Mercy last night. A Hunter killed me inside the helicopter, but a teammate hopped on to safety.

This game was meant to be played on Expert. They need a difficulty between Advanced and Expert, though. The girlfriend and I can run through Advanced and she can’t hack it on Expert (not to mention that the bots are reeeeetarded).
