No Zombie love? (Left 4 Dead)

Well, I’m not guaranteeing that he’ll fall in love with it, I’m just saying that it’s a good game for co-op mode.

Yes. You can play split-screen against hordes of evil zombie scum. That’s how the girl and I play.

Hmm… I’m on PC, so no split screen view. We’d be at separate PCs.

Well, I don’t see why PC couldn’t handle it in a similar fashion then on two separate computers.

Yep, you can easily join up and play coop just the two of you with two PC’s. Actually, you can play split screen on a single PC if you wanted to. Personally, I find it distracting unless it’s on a very big HD screen.

You will need two copies of the game, however, and two steam accounts (free) for each one of you.

The survivor team always has 4 players, but you can play a campaign together so that you play 2 of the survivors and the AI (which is good most of the time, and fine for normal difficulty) handles the other 2.

More help.

Apparently not, as eris pointed out. I’ve never actually seen anyone take on a tank like that in any difficulty. So you’d still have to spread out for tanks. Still, one entrance is easier to guard than two. You do have the trade off of not being right by ammo and health, though.

Under the ramp is a versus mode strategy only. (They also removed the only counter to it a few patches ago.) The best expert mode strategy is to use the “revive” closet and spam melee. Probably won’t work with AIs though

Something rather strange happened to me tonight. I started a campaign (No Mercy, Expert); I checked the difficulty after the game started, and it said No Mercy, Expert. About halfway through the first chapter, I checked the difficulty again. No Mercy, Versus; we had the average distance, health, and score readouts for Versus Mode. The monsters were on Expert damage and we didn’t encounter any boss infected. When we made it to the safe room, the game tabulated our score and pitted the four of us against four AI controlled survivors. We killed them, and then the game got stuck after tabulating their score. We voted to return to the lobby. It was weird.

I still love campaign, even though most people seem to have moved on to versus mode - which, due to the ridiculousness of melee-spam, can be very frustrating.

Anybody down for an expert playthrough? I’ve yet to beat any finale on the hardest difficulty.

Did a run with 3x hunting rifles and a noob with an auto-shotgun. The hunting rifle is unquestionably the worst gun in the game for versus. If your team takes more than one, you’ll probably lose.

Anyone learn the insta-kill on the No Mercy finale with the smoker? That’s so cheap.

What platform are you playing on?

I agree that you guys could play together, with two AI characters rounding out your team, and have fun.

If you go ahead and get the game, you are welcome to play with me (n00b) and my husband, who has a lot of experience but is very patient and fun. Seriously, I still have trouble getting through doorways sometimes, but I’m having a great time playing with SDMBers and even with random strangers online.

I finally played it this weekend with another player sitting next to me and it was pretty good. Not transcendental like some are calling it but a superior piece of work. For those who have noticed my many complaints about modern level design in FPS’s Left 4 Dead is exactly how things should be done; multiple paths at some point, wide environments, and occasionally forcing things into a natural feeling channel. That said I don’t know if it’s really the best game for someone new to things.

The problem is the game is intense. The autopacing system is a wonderful idea but it means that things do not let up. In my experience people who don’t regularly play action heavy games need a bit of downtime to recover but in Left 4 Dead the down time between rushes is when you’re trying to gain as much ground as you can before the next horrible thing happens.

You’ll have to judge for yourself if that’s right for your husband; he might enjoy the pacing or it might frazzle him badly enough that he just doesn’t want to play.

It’s okay. It’s too short, but the AI Director makes up for that. I play if someone else wants to play.

It’s fun.

This is definitely a coop game, and in that sense I think each campaign is the perfect length. If you are looking at this game as a single player game ONLY or primarily, I would either skip it or wait until it’s on sale. If the campaigns were any longer I wouldn’t be able to play through an entire one except on weekends. Much shorter, and there might be pacing issues.

I am eagerly awaiting the opening of the other two campaign modes to VS, and hopefully some new campaigns in the future. Valve, I’m sure will deliver on that count, either with a free campaign or two, or an expansion of some sort.

Judging by the way they’re treating TF2, new levels will probably be free.
And due to the fact that Hammer has been around forever, there’s actually some really talented amateurs that are into mapping. As soon as they release the official L4D SDK, I’m pretty sure we’re going to get flooded with custom maps.

Oh, I’m sure there will be some downloadable content.

There are already people planning for when they release the SDK for left 4 dead. This level was originally going to be used in HL2, but the guy intends to bring it to l4d. Linky

Beyond that, given Valve’s record with TF2 and HL, I’m sure we can count on additional content at some point. Most likely free. If nothing else, I hope they port the remaining two campaigns to versus mode.

By the way, the game is losing its appeal. It’s fun, and I’ll play it if I get invites to and if my girlfriend wants to, but that’s about it.
