Nominate the most historically significant threads (What did I miss?)

I suspect there may have been a thread like this before, but I’ve searched and was unable to find it…

Like the majority of you, I simply don’t have the time to read every single thread on the board or keep up with every aspect of the soap opera that is the SDMB. I’m sure there are interpersonal things going on that I missed. Some of them I’ve caught up on later, others I haven’t had the energy to research. Threadspotting is great, but we all know it’s only skimming the surface.

So, for the sake of SDMB posterity (and the newbies), I suggest a historical record of the most significant personalities and threads here. Preferably this would be an honest list, whether it be the sordid Melin incident or the light-hearted Nazi Groundhogs. I have no desire to open old wounds, but rather to enlighten those who miss out on the insider’s references.

How about it?

I think that a few good additions would be:

Wally’s heart surgery
Wally’s assorted gerbil/motorcycle/etc. threads
Wally’s mourning thread
FreakFreely’s complete and utter implosion
Not to toot my own horn, but my 'shrooms thread and VVC thread
Coldfire’s Day to Remember thread
Ummm… can’t think of any more.

Try these:

You want to stick that thing WHERE?!?! - Satan

Guy Stuff - UncleBeer

Guy Stuff 3: The Search for 2 - Surgoshan

Guy stuff III: chicks, thongs, and yummy butt crack sweat (For VB) - ChiefScott

The Death of Guy Stuff - UncleBeer

I miss the “Guy Stuff” thread - ChiefScott

Novelize the Guy Stuff thread! - Ophanim

The Guy Stuff Novelette promised by Falcon -ChiefScott

Did Guy Stuff reach escape velocity? - Rysdad

SAVE GUY STUFF - SunsetLightning

May 5, 1945 - we shall remember. - Coldfire

Thats just a quick list. You’d be well served to search in General Questions by username for Cecil Adams and read some of the threads he’s replied to. The flowing glass one got particularly heated. And I’m happy to say I’ve gotten a few responses.

If your looking for meltdowns, drama, and assorted other soap operas search MPSIMS for Opalcat, Melin, FreakFeely, heatherlee and probably a few others I’m missing.

Who Wants To Be A Phaedrusaire? - manhattan

This is a great one, and anything with the name Phaedrus attached is bound to be relevant.

Hmm, the preview is leaving out a ton of things typed here, I’m gonna give this a shot. fingers crossed

I have no idea why those 2 links worked without quotes yet none of the others did…

I have one small request.
View these posts all you want, but please do not try to revive them, because old arguments and older trolls are best left in the past, don’tcha think?

Thanks for suggesting this. I didn’t read Evil Nazi Groundhogs until we got our own groundhog a couple of months ago. And just today (after seeing it here) I read the astonishing thread Coldfire started about the WWII remembrance. Wow.

The search doesn’t reach back that far (or I don’t know how to do it), but the Naked Pillow Fight thread from last year was almost as much fun as Guy Stuff. Maybe one of the participants has the url.

I agree whole-heartedly; this was part of what I was trying to convey when I mentioned “old wounds.”

I’m sure the mods are busy enough dealing with current problems without having to put out old flames.

That said, keep 'em coming…

(Is this by any chance the pillow fight you were referring to? I’m not up on my pillow fight history…)

That’s it! Tell me, how do you search for something that’s more than 30 days old? Or did it make Threadspotting?

(I’d suggest that maybe you saved it, but you said you weren’t here then.)

Never mind. (Gilda Radner emoticon here.) You said no such thing, did you?

Sorry, I’m SO old.

When you do a search, change the “Search by Date” (found on the far right under “Search Options”) to “Any Date”. This should allow you to find the older threads.

Thank you! (And a big d’oh to me for not seeing that.)

Okay, it took almost half an hour, and I found it in the middle of the 2522 threads he’s participated in (is that what the count means, or is it posts?). Here’s my nomination – Ike worked his butt off for us in this one. Thanks again, Ike.

Boy, what a trip down memory lane that was, searching for this.

any list of historical threads must include this one:

[sub]make pig noises![sub]

Dare I say the name that shall not be spoken?

I dare!

LOVEROCK!

Couple more off the top of my head:

Ask the Gay Guy! - Esprix

Ask the Gay Guy II!! - Esprix

Ask the Gay Guy III! - Esprix

Ask the Gay Guy III?! - Esprix

To be honest I’ve never read these threads, but I do know the are remembered fondly by most. If work stays slow today I might do some catching up on them myself. These threads started literally dozens of clones, both serious, comical, and patronizing so I reccommend a search for the keywords “ask the” in “the subject only” and you’ll likely get a nice list to sift through.

Man-pickle?? MAN-PICKLE!!! - mego the roo
I love this thread, she’s just so damn cute.

These threads are always relevant.
Explain your user name - Cool Hand

How did you chose your username? - andygirl

And as I’m listing these its apparent that there are a fucking million permutations on this theme. This is a start for you though.

I’m not a big GDer but I know if you keyword search of “Libertarian”, “creationists”, or “flat earth” you’ll be kept occupied for hours.

A quick aside if I might - I wanted to thank you for starting this thread - I’m practically alone today, and am in for some good reading! Thanks!!!

2522 does appear to be the number of threads Ike has posted in. The easier way to find that thread would be search for keyword “book suggestions” or “book Ukulele”, in “Subject Only” on “Any Date”.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but here are links to some of the threads Homer nominated:

Wally’s Heart Surgery
FreakFreely’s complete and utter implosion
'shrooms thread
VVC thread

As for:
Wally’s assorted gerbil/motorcycle/etc. threads
Wally’s mourning thread

Well… he had so many mourning threads, I’m not sure posting one will do. As for the others, I don’t have the time now to go through all the classics, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention:

Wally tries cybersex!

I blame you, Mrblue!

Last evening I opened this thread. This morning (about 3:30) I decided that if I was going to be at work at 9, I should get some sleep. I started closing windows. I’d say I closed about 17 windows! There were these links and then there were links in the links. And then the links had links. It was like falling down the rabbit hole.

I don’t work tomorrow. I’ll see where the rabbit hole ends tonight.

Umm… Umm…

Read THIS. Perhaps when you stop laughing you’ll forget I ever existed…

I got a bunch:

[ul]
[li]“Homosexuality, a crime ?” by ORION*******ORION - a classic![/li]
[li]“Homosexual “rights”?!” by pashley - another classic from a classic poster.[/li]
[li]“The Ethics of Homosexuality” by Libertarian - just generally a good thread, thanks to Lib.[/li]
[li]“What the fuck is wrong with these homophobic bigots?” by Esprix - my first Pit rant.[/li]
[li]“Who here is queer?” by Esprix - and after reading it, I just resurrected it. :D[/li]
[li]“This queer’s switching teams” by Snark - the infamous thread that started quite a chapter in the saga that is the SDMB.[/li]
[li]“This queer’s switching teams” by Esprix - one of my {ahem} “clever” responses.[/li]
[li]“I can remain silent no longer” by Esprix – unfortunately, I can’t find this thread anywhere. Was it deleted? I didn’t think so, but it’s nowhere to be found. Hmmm… (This was another infamous response to the above-referenced Snark thread.)[/li]
[li]“Is there a such thing a the “gay gene”?” by Rook - another classic thread o’ idiocy.[/li]
[li]“Penile Lengthening Column” by Jack Dean Tyler - read the threads, and read the responses in the Pit! Modern day classics![/li]
[li]"Esprix & Dr. Boyfriend” by Esprix - one (now closed) chapter in my life (see also the follow-up “Esprix & Dr. Boyfriend, Part II; or, How The SD Ruined My Life”).[/li]
[li]“Christianity and Love” (part one of three) by pepperlandgirl - FriendofGod struts his stuff![/li]
[li]“Please list the “special rights”” by Otto - another generally good all-round queer thread.[/ul][/li]
Hmmm, I’m sensing a trend - can you tell which threads I notice most? I suppose the Gay Guy needs to keep up appearances…

Esprix

Here’s one I liked - concrete’s Protest Thread. The one thing about this that irks me, though: Because this made Threadspotting, concrete (in one of his forms) will occasionally brag about it after being caught. I’d just like to point out that if you read the OP, it’s just another trolling attempt. If you read the 2nd reply you’ll see who started the protest that got the thread to Threadspotting.

Also - since it’s been mentioned, here’s Wally’s gerbil incident

:sigh:

One day I’ll post something we’ll be telling all the little newbies about . . .
