In order to assist anybody who has had an interest in The truly great threads in SDMB history, I already started Fun Threads from your first month at SDMBwhich has some samples of mine and some hints on how to retrieve your own first month’s goodies.

For further assistance, and to save you some time, I have gathered the following data by forum of all threads still visible since “from the beginning” sorted in descending order of Number of Replies.

No links are provided, but this should help to locate any you remember as being worth consideration for the Truly Great listing.

The BIG ones are any with at least 1,000 Replies.

Add any that fit your own definition of BIG.

Ahh. Makes me nostalgic for the old days seeing “Guy stuff” on the list. Thread that crashed the server before the software could handle one that big.

That’d be cool, Marley23. This thread just sat there for going on two weeks with no replies and few views, so I wasn’t going to press the issue. But since a few have stepped forward, your suggestion seems worthwhile.

FWIW, I believe a few threads that were approaching 1,000 replies as I posted the OP may have crossed the border. I’ll check and add them if I can locate them. The searches are relatively cheap in that you don’t have to wait 5 minutes between them.

It looks like my memory was wrong. No new 1,000+ Replies threads to add. Some got enough more than others to move up the ladder, but no new ones to add yet.

No ask the threads? The Ask The Gay Guy thread and Ask The Cop were pretty big IIRC.

Not big enough in the sense of over 1,000 replies.

Ask the Gay Guy probably isn’t on the list because it was from back in the day when the server couldn’t handle threads that long, so it got split up into 3 or 4 threads. But based on the “other criteria for big” the OP mentioned, it should probably go on the list.

We’ve had a few threads that ended up being widely disseminated across the Internet, despite a relatively small number of posts. The Horror of Blimps is the only one that comes to mind, though. Well, that and If LotR was written by someone else? (the posting of which is actually the most prominent feature on graphs of the server access logs), but that’s already on the list.

Thanks for explaining this, Chronos, since those threads were before my time (2003) I guess. I was at the mercy of the current listings when I compiled the list in the OP.

If anybody would like to point to the “Ask the____” threads that did get split up, that would be a great contribution to this thread. Unfortunately, a keyword search on “ask the” wouldn’t even get started, right?

Well, the 1,000 cut-off was totally arbitrary on my part, and I did say, “Add any that fit your own definition of BIG.”

The whole point of this thread was to assist in selecting threads for that “Truly Great Threads” thread, if anybody deemed them truly great.

“Great” is a matter of taste, for sure. And so is BIG.
