Non-Collectible Card Games

I’m looking for some recommendations for some card games. Something fun and witty. Last year I bought my boyfriend Munchkin and we enjoyed playing that. We also have Guillotine which is funny, too.

I’m looking at Killer Bunnies. Has anyone played this before?

I’m looking for something with a sense of humor and that will be fun to play. It’d be best if it could be played with only 2 people so my boyfriend and I could play even if no one else is around, but that’s not absolutely necessary.

Any recommendations?

Fluxx.

Keeper cards are used to win the game. Goal cards change what the object of the game is. Rule change cards change how the game is played.

Tough to explain, fun to play. Games last a few minutes at most.

You do know there are umpteen zillion Munchkin flavors, right? (Star Munchkin, Munchkin Fu, Manchkin Bites, etc)

Another popoular card game is “bang” (I’ve never played it)

Illuminati.

I don’t like Killer Bunnies at all. The game comes down to a lottery at the end which makes the rest of the game insignificant. On the other hand, I can’t stand Munchkin or Fluxx since I find them random and pointless.

For a 2 player card game with some strategy I recommend Lost Cities. Simple to understand with some vast strategic depth.

See if you can find Enemy in Sight; 19th-century naval battles.

Bang! is an awesome game. It’s expecially awesome when you’re playing it with an 8 year old and he exclaims “I Bang her!” as he plays a Bang! card or “I’m wounded, I need some beer”. The version I have has rather confusion rules translated from Italian.

Apples to Apples is a lot of fun.

I’m partial to Chrononauts, but Fluxx is good too.

Chez Geek is pretty fun, though with two people it’s pretty strategy light, but probably at the same level as Guillotine.

Both games are developed by Looney Labs, “that hippie game company.” Chrononauts is the same idea as Fluxx, but with a time-travel theme.

My friends and I have started playing Lunch Money lately. Light, vicious, quick. It’s fun

Yes, but it would be really boring with two people.

Player 1: “Show me things that are Beautiful!”
Player 2: Plays any noun card and is guaranteed to win.

(Apples is a great game, but works best for large groups)

Although not necessarily witty, let me suggest:

San Juan a strategy card game for 2-4 that is lots of fun. Plays differently every time.

Mystery Rummy: Murders in the Rue Morgue my favorite Mystery Rummy game because it has the Orangutan card! Plays 2-4. It is rummy with a neat theme and special power cards.

Battle Line a simple tactical card game in which the players face off over control of the line, duking it out with poker hands.

Mille Bornes?

No, it isn’t. Chrononauts doesn’t have rule-changing gameplay, it has the timeline - it’s a completely different game.

And there are variants, to suit whatever group you are playing with. Family Fluxx, EcoFluxx, Jewish and Christian expansion card sets, but it looks like my copy of Stoner Fluxx is going to be kind of rare for a while.
