A guy at work asked me if there was a way for his elderly mother to listen to music on her walks without wearing headphones. She has two hearing aids, and apparently would never wear headphones anyway.
I thought I remembered a collar with speakers in it, but I can’t find anything. Does anyone have any pointers? Thanks.
In the early 1980s there was a radio collar called the “Bone Phone” or “Bone-A-Phone” or something like that. It was supposed to use bone conduction from your collarbones and vibrate the sound right into your head.
I haven’t seen one of those in 20+ years, but I suppose you can find almost anything on eBay.
On a somewhat more realistic note, I have two or three different units that go by names like “personal speaker” "personal stereo speaker “pocket speaker” etc. They’re all simply a speaker cord that plugs into the headphone jack of your basic radio, cassette player, personal CD player or what have you and connects to a speaker box about the size of what we oldsters call a “transistor radio.” Runs on a 9 volt battery (not included). I see them at dollar stores and the like all the time, and I’m sure Radio Shack, Circuit City, etc. have their own models.
Don’t confuse this with something called “passive speakers.” These work on a battery and can amplify the sound.
The sound quality is only passable, and you need to wear it close to the music maker (they have about a 12" cord) but they work and they’re cheap. Some even come with a belt hook.
