Non-hunters: do you have a game-meat source?

It’s deer-shooting season here in Indiana, been bow-hunting season for a few weeks already, and I have a friend who has bagged three so far. Yay!

Now, if I tried shooting a deer, I’d be crying over a clean kill, going into therapy over a messy kill & puking during the field dressing. I know my limits. But Ah loves me some venison & so am quite thankful for friends who can do all that! Got no moral problem with it at all.

So any non-hunters here have hunting friends who set you up with your favorite game-meats?

Our local butchers are great for game - rabbit (wild), venison (farmed, rather than wild), grouse, partridge, pheasant etc.

Not sure where you are in Indiana, but if you’re anywhere southeast of Indianapolis, you might want to give Jungle Jim’s International Market of Fairfield, Ohio a try. They have a pretty good selection of game all year round, and not just venison but game from other parts of the country like elk or moose. They’ve got game birds too.

Actually, Jungle Jim’s is probably worth the trip from anywhere in Indiana. I’ve gone to southwest Ohio just to go there, and I live in western New York.

Yep!

Unfortunately, they didn’t have much luck last year.

The only things that stop me from hunting myself are:

  1. Lack of weaponry
  2. Field dressing a deer is nasty, bloody work. It’s not so much the squick, it’s the sheer effort involved in disassembling something bigger than me.

And I find fishing godawful boring - though I have no problems with scaling/cleaning a fish.

No, and I wish I did - I do have a family friend that hunts, but he hasn’t been so lucky lately and I think he donates all his kills. I haven’t had venison in ages. I haven’t asked at the meat market, though.

I work opposite a deer park, so when they do the annual cull the Park Rangers/Murderers let us buy the venison quite cheaply - http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=bs3+2jt&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=12.918331,24.521484&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Bristol,+Avon+BS3+2JT,+United+Kingdom&ll=51.444325,-2.631912&spn=0,0.011973&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=51.444294,-2.631803&panoid=XnWA7a4YLCy6Upt-qmCIJQ&cbp=12,9.74,3,8.37

Yes, we have lots of friends and family members who hunt, and a neighbor who likes to dress deer in this garage (heh). We can get deer, quail, and pheasant whenever we want it. It’s also available at a couple of local specialty markets.

Funny that Jungle Jims came up. For years I had recurring dreams about it… before I’d ever been there or heard of it. One great big high-ceilinged labyrinthlike grocery store…

I’m in SE Indiana. It’s about a two-hour drive. Haven’t even thought about that!

I have friends who hunt duck, pheasant, and turkey, and I could get the occasional bird from them. However, I promised my dentist I wouldn’t eat anything with bird-shot in it.
