Is there anywhere that I can get a list of large oil producers that are not members of OPEC? I mean, I know Norway, Canada and Russia all produce large amounts, as do many other middle eastern countries. However, I would like to see examples of what they produce and who they supply to.
According to the US Energy Administration, the top 6 petroleum producing nations in the world for 2000 were:
1 Saudi Arabia
2. Russia
3. USA
4. Iran
5. China
6. Norway
Of those six, only Saudi Arabia and Iran are in OPEC. OPEC is meant for countries whose main economy is EXPORTING oil as opposed to producing oil in order to consume it as the US does.
Yeah I did some research on it. I found a lot of info of that kind, the top ten oil producers and it had info on their natural gas an coal output as well, but I was interested in who provides it to whom, and at what volume.
I know that Norway, where I live, exports more than 90% of all the oil pumped up within its area of influence. Its electrical needs are covered mostly (somewhat in the vicinity of 60%, IIRC) by hydro power, but a lot is imported. Don’t know about coal. I believe natural gas is exported, as well, though there have been heated talks about a natural gas power plant.
This may not be an easy answer for you, but check out the World Fact Book. It lists every country on the planet, includes resource productions data (oil for example) as well as international organizations (such as OPEC), as well as primary export partners. Sorry it can’t be a nice list of countries that produce oil, whether they are OPEC, and whom they sell to, but, you’ll learn that Venezuela produces petroleum, is a member of OPEC, and exports 60% of thier goods (not necessarily oil, though) to the United States.
here’s some from norway:
The country is richly endowed with natural resources - petroleum, hydropower, fish, forests, and minerals - and is highly dependent on its oil production and international oil prices; in 1999, oil and gas accounted for 35% of exports. Only Saudi Arabia and Russia export more oil than Norway. With arguably the highest quality of life worldwide, Norwegians still worry about that time in the next two decades when the oil and gas begin to run out. Accordingly, Norway has been saving its oil-boosted budget surpluses in a Government Petroleum Fund, which is invested abroad and now is valued at more than $43 billion.
Electricity - production:
141.162 billion kWh (2000)
Electricity - production by source:
fossil fuel: 0.49%
hydro: 99.31%
other: 0.2% (2000)
nuclear: 0%
Electricity - consumption:
112.495 billion kWh (2000)
Exports - partners:
EU 76.8% (Netherlands 11.4%, Germany 10.3%, France 10.0%, Sweden 8.4%), US 7.6% (2000)
Ok, yes, the World Factbook cite is exactly what I needed thanks.
Balthisar: As for Venezuela I could just go to www.opec.org , which I did. That’s why I was asking about NON-OPEC countries. I don’t know why I didn’t think of the World Factbook.
This site has everything about energy with many pdf or xls downloadable reports. Petroleum, Solar, Nukes, energy, energy, energy. Energizer Bunny probably too.
Sorry, but I don’t have enough energy to look anything up for you.
You’re welcome. Actually, Venezuela was the example I choose because I knew it was an OPEC country, and wanted to make sure OPEC was listed. Presumably those oil-producing countries that aren’t OPEC members wouldn’t have OPEC listed!
