I dislike the “Dr. Frasier Crane-ish” responses. Okay - we get it: you’re a member of Mensa - we’re discussing boy bands here so you can cool out with the $300 words. Sometimes I’ll read a post and wonder, does anyone really speak this way in friendly conversations?

            No sorry but when a one legged man comes up to me in the street and complains because i`m not hopping THEN I`ll think about dumbing down . : : :)   But that raises the question is the bar set at your level ?or does it depend on the number of syllables in a word? If someone with a lesser vocab then yourself starts posting do we drop the bar again ? Do we not post on Physics ,demography or economics anywhere on these boards just because its a little more complex then the funny pages ?That way we`ll end up talking in "kiddy speech".Free speech is just that ,dont expect the rest of us to cater to your level of understanding ,Idont complain about other peoples spelling mistakes or grammar as long as they are understandable !if you `re struggling then go out and try and educate yourself to a level where you understand whats going on! Mind you I`m  probably typing in an English accent  ;) And before anyone mentions it my `puter keeps formatting out my paragraphs when I post ,any helpful suggestions v. welcome .

Just like to mention again that while Im not of Hawkings intellect Ido realise that a lack of paragraph breaks is a real pain !but the paragraphs I put in when I type disappear when I post as the puter reformats .And once again any helpful suggestions v. welcome !Apologies.

Personally I use "err"when I feel Im being a little bit picky about an item that is not central to the post but the error is just to niggling to ignore completely ,like to use a non real example someone posts a very intelligent item about the North American economy but keeps referring to N.york as the U.S.A.s capital.Mind you its only the Atlantic thats prevented me from being lynched by enraged Dopers (presentation is MUCH,MUCH more important then the content I`ve found )so best you move on to a snappier posting

When someone uses the word “vitriol,” as in “spewing vitriol” or “heaping vitriol” on someone. It seems to be used here about 10 thousand times more than anywhere else. I can’t say why, but the word just annoys me.

Makes you a little vitriolic does it ?

“If you don’t like it, don’t read it.” is my biggest SDMB peeve. If someone posts a thread identical to the dozens like it that they’ve previously posted, I think it’s fair to call them on it. And if someone posts a thread in which their structure and style is so gothic, convoluted, or smugly self-satisfied that it overshadows whatever point they’re trying to make, I think it’s legit to comment on the prose as well as the idea.

My usual response to “if you don’t like it…” is that if I don’t comment, I have to endure the same crap in the future. While if I comment, there’s a tiny chance that the feedback will have some useful effect.

O.M.G ! who can you mean I am working on it but its alot different from boards Im more used to !And just because Im better then the rest of you it DOESNT mean Im smugly self satisfied it just means Im right as usual ,or have been drinking .

I hate the way some posters try to promote their ignorance as some kind of "Im a down to earth straight talking pragmatist !I cant be bothered with all those fancy words ,Im a real man !"er no (yep I`m being supercilious !well spotted !) your just ignorant ,no more no less ,your pecker dont grow the dumber you get !If you cant understand the words themselves how the hell can you have any idea of the points being made ?

Excellent points, Martini. (There - how’s that? ) I especially like the one about United Statesian politics. I probably could physically care less about them, but it would take a major effort on my part.

But MOST of all I hate it when people leave a little gap when they use punctuation ,using a word of MORE then three syllables and I VIVIDLY remember someone once deliberately trying to humiliate me by spelling the words right ,Icouldnt sleep for 3 days I was so upset !and these people from the other side of the world who not only dont know all about our local politicians BUT dont post in my local accent !what IS the matter with them ? And dont you EVER,EVER tell me Ihave an empty life spending my day whining about long words that Idont understand and looking for trivial irrelevancies in postings made by people who are DELIBERATELY trying to make me aware of my own inadequacies just to make me feel bad cos I`m pretty central to their lives …need I go on ?

Not specifically a Doper thing, but I have an irrational hatred for tongue-sticking-out smilies. I don’t mind when they’re used occasionally and in the proper making-a-joke type context, but… well, to me, that’s kind of a “haha, got you” smiley, and it irritates me beyond words when people use it like “ok, it’s been nice talking to you, going out for lunch now =P” or “I saw that movie too, I didn’t really like it though :p”.

I am aware that this is a completely irrational peeve, mind, so I don’t actually hold it against anyone, or at least I don’t unless they insist on using the thing ALL THE TIME.

Will someone please explain, what is the fascination on this board about humans hybridizing with chimps? I swear, I’ve gone my entire life without wanting to bugger a chimp, without thinking about buggering a chimp, and without talking about buggering a chimp. But I log onto this board, and damned if a week goes by without someone wanting to know if he or she and a chimp could have a little bundle of hairy joy. Chrissake, the ape house at the zoo better have more security than a nuclear power plant.
