SDMB pet peeves

Ther are a lot of things I see on this board that annoy me, but the worst has to be this:

When a post asks for a listing of things (not an authoritative list, but a list of opinions), invariably before the thread has 20 replies, some killjoy will link to a site with a note saying “Here is a site with a bazillion answers!”.

The worst offenders are those that reply to a “What is your favorite…?” post by giving a list of answers so long you have to scroll down to get through it. “Favorite” is singular, dingleberry.

I hate the bastards who complain about goings-on of the boards and posters in general in MPSIMS instead of the Pit.
But that’s just IMHO.

I have a bunch, let me see if I can remember them all. I was thinking about doing a thread like this once, but I never got the nerve. I’s ascared of the Pit, which is where I’da put it.

One is when people don’t realize that 4 other posters in a thread have posted the exact same information they did. I guess it’s a failure to actually read the thread. They must just read the question and click the “Post Reply” button. And I look at the time stamps, sometimes you’ll see an hour between these posts. If I come into a thread, read the OP, and think “Hey, I know this!”, three posts down I’ll see exactly what I wanted to say. Rather than post anyway and repeat everything already said, I’ll move on. And stick with a low post count. Oh well.

Also, when someone mentions some link they found, you always get people saying “Oh yeah, I saw that X time ago…” and then make their commentary. I don’t care when you saw it, Mr. Ahead of the Curve, you can just post your comment. Interestingly, as thread develop, the times increase. Poster 2 may say “Oh yeah, I came across that a month ago.” Poster 6 says “That site’s still around? I haven’t seen it in ages!” Just seems like some sort of CyberEgo thing to me.

Lamest. Cliche. Ever. gets annoying.

The casting about of the word “bigot” is so carefree around here, too. I’m by no means conservative, but there’s a number of posters who seem to think they’re The Enlightened Ones, and if you don’t agree with them, you’re a bigot or some other derogatory term.

“In which PosterName blah blah…” post titles need to go.

Overuse of rolleyes.

I haven’t seen it much lately, but it used to be the thing to “Pull up a lawn chair and some popcorn” when some SD BigWig was getting flamed by a newbie. “Hey, pass me some of that popcorn,” the next poster would invariable say.

Also, it seems like everyone who has difficulty controlling laughter drinks Dr. Pepper. Almost every time I see the lame old “Thanks, PosterX, now I have to clean BeverageX off my monitor!” (always in response to some mildly-funny-at-best comment), it’s Dr. Pepper. Maybe it’s always the same poster, I haven’t paid attention. In any case, the whole schtick needs to be retired.

Alright, that’s a partial list of my accumulated peeves from the past few years as a lurker. Thank you for starting a thread where I can vent them!

My pet peeve is posters who don’t read the rules. :stuck_out_tongue:

Psst. It’s the FIRST one.

How about whenever anyone over 1000 posts gets banned it spawns a 3+ page discussion in the pit. They are always the same

I don’t see why XXX got banned it’s so unfair.

Here’s why cite and here’s an earlier warning CITE

but but it’s so unfair…I liked him.

all the rules on SDMB are BS I think the mods are out of control

How is it unfair? He broke the rules got warned broke them again and got banned.

(long semantic disscussion of if the poster broke the rules or not along with a lot of whining about how the rules are too vague)

Only four replies in and I’ve seen two more of my pet peeves appear.

I won’t list them or I’d be violating my own #1 peeve.

In “terrible movies” type threads in Café Society, people take so much pride is stating that they walked out in the first half hour. If you only saw 25% of a movie, you’re really not in a position to state an opinion.

I also hate it when someone demands a definition to a common everyday word, usually in response to an OP in Great Debates. I’m hoping an OP will some day just provide a link to dictionary.com rather than play along. Teach a man to fish and all of that.

The fact that any Wage Slave Complaint Thread will eventually draw the “Customer Is Always Right” whiners.

That any banning thread will inevitably contain one person whining about how the “Don’t be a jerk” rule is vague and we don’t have 27 enumerations and precise definitions for jerklike behavior.

When someone says “Yeah what XXX said” and that’s it. At least say “I Second XXX plus here’s a little more info”

When someone makes a very small mistake like writting ‘teh’ instead of ‘the’ and then corrects themselves ten seconds later with a

“teh=the :smack:”

If you garble your post and need to correct fine but if you’re correcting a mistake any reasonable person could figure out what you said why do you bother?

I. Hate. When. People. Do. This.

I have to totally agree with you on that one.

Something else that bugs me is people who don’t understand about when something’s implied. For example, a while ago there was a post asking something about souls, I forget what exactly, but one of the first replies went along the lines of “Well, I’m an atheist, so I don’t believe in souls.”…No, really??? And that contributed to the discussion, how? It seemed obvious to me that it was implied that the question be answered by, oh, I don’t know, people who believe in souls maybe?

Why not? If the first quarter of a movie totally sucks ass, chances are good to excellent that the rest will too.

Some of the best movies take at least a half an hour to draw you in. Thinking back over the last couple of months, I’m so glad I resisted the temptation to walk away from what turned out to some really great movies. Spirited Away, Spider, Changing Lanes, and Far From Heaven are some examples off the top of my head.

-Posters (particularly veteran ones) who don’t know how to code, as well as those who invent their own method of quoting and those who respond to an entirely quoted post with a one-word or one-sentence comment.

-Complaints about board features or board speed, especially the self-centered ones: “I like to [post, search, etc.] this such-and-such way, so let’s change the board so that it’s easier for me.”

Overuse of terms such as “ad hominem” and “strawman” (and it’s “straw man”, two words). Often comes across like the poster just got back from Debating Techniques 101 and is eager to try out these fancy new terms.

Or when a group of posters are having a friendly discussion about a movie or TV show, someone will invariably come into the thread and shit all over it.
“That movie sucked! I can’t believe you liked it! It’s the worst movie ever!”
Yeah, thanks for adding so much to the discussion.

The TV episode threads are even better.
“Is that show still on? It sucks.”
“I’ve never seen one episode of Show Being Discussed. It sucks monkey ass.”
And you can determine it sucks monkey ass without having ever seen it because…?

  • People that have a chip on their shoulder and take it personally when someone disagrees with them. Come on, lighten up! Don’t you see how boring it would be if everyone agreed with you?

  • Cite, Hi Opal, and 1920’s style death rays.

People who don’t use the Quote button and instead do a far inferior job using their own quote style.

People who don’t quote at all, just respond to the previous post, but someone else slips inbetween causing the rejoinder to be cast adrift. Which then results in the poster posting again with “my response was to…”

People who don’t use Preview.

I do this far, far too often. :bashful: It’s just quicker to type into the Quick Reply box than to hit Quote and wait for the screen to load. I know, it’s just laziness, but that’s probably why other people do it at times.

I don’t know if it’s a HATE thing…but in threads in which people list things off - mostly in IMHO - it’s just a list. I think it makes for a more entertaining and engaging post when people list of WHAT and WHY.

“Who are your favorite symphonic composers?”
"Dvorak
"Bach
“Mozart”

…isn’t as informative or conversation-inspiring as:

“Who are your favorite symphonic composers?”
"Dvorak, because he wrote pieces which are rich in relatively unusual harmonic lines.
"Bach, because some of his etudes are easy to play on the piano, and he’s quite accessible to the layman.
“Mozart, because in many of his pieces you can really get a sense for his playfulness.”

Even a short description can give depth to an answer, and let you know more about both the subject AND the poster in question.
