non Pit-able Doper pet peeves

Typing your reply above the passage you’re quoting. My God man, were you raised by wolves? Stupid wolves?

I also despise quoting the entire OP, especially if someone is the first to reply. Three or four pages down, maybe it’s needed to get everyone back on track to what the thread was about, but not in the #1 spot.

People who positively, have to be the exception to the rule. An example: Someone will post a pit thread about some annoying personality trait they don’t like, or a bad habit they hate. It can be 100% justified, too (like saying they hate people who run red lights, and don’t stop for pedestrians when the sign says to.) Invariably, someone will come along and mention that it just so happens that they (or someone they knoiw,) have to run red lights and ignore pedestrian crossings because blah blah blah whiney-ass reason. Usually, the most popular type of example is someone pitting lazy people who take the elevator for one flight, or park in handicaped spots, and somone will come in to say maybe they have a disability you can’t see. Look, what’s more likely, some rare genetic disorder, or they are just a lazy fuck? I’m thinking option two.

I agree with you when the question is something like, “By the way, what’s the capital of Oklahoma?” On the other hand, how much effort does it take to answer, “Oklahoma City. I typed ‘capital Oklahoma’ in Google.” I’m not all hot and bothered about it, but unnecessary snarkiness rubs me the wrong way.

Another example of unneccessary snarkiness that I see sometimes is when someone posts something that’s already been done to death. Before replying, “Can’t we finally let this die a merciful death? I mean, for the love of God, people, we’ve addressed this already!,” take a second to look at the poster’s post count. If it’s less than a thousand, there’s a good chance that the topic is new to the poster, if not the veterans of SDMB. Something like “We covered this a lot of times already. See this link” would do the trick.

Totally agree with this. We’re not going to think you’re stupid and can’t spell because you spelled it “jsut”. Really.

Anyone who does this gets far more grief than the person who made the typo.

I admit it. I’m addicted to smileys. It comes from several years of working in online communities where we learned to “smile from the wrists down”. Throw things across the room if you must, but smile online.

So, I do

Here’s another reason to not read my posts. Go me!

When people use acronyms instead of spelling out the titles of the movie/TV show/book: “Did you like tLKoS? I was going to see JNT, but wound up at SfS instead.”

What the hell are you talking about?! Use the extra three seconds and let the rest of us in on it too!

Hey, I just used one for the first time ever in this every thread!

Rats.

I hate the posts that are like “I have an English/History/Political Science degree… what can I do with it?!” Do you want us to plan your whole life out for you while we’re at it? You should have thought about this when doing your studies instead of asking complete strangers what you should be doing with your life!! I hate these threads!!

I do agree with correcting people with extreme prejudice when they constantly misspell a word pertinent to the discussion. “Athiests” is particularly common, and irritating, in a thread or OP about atheists.

I used to correct people’s apostrophes but have given up.

Yes, and cutsey-pie and unfathomable nicknames they got from TWOP. Look dudes- this is the SDMB, not TWOP. It’s “Jeff” or “Probst” not "Peachy’. We have ten+ times as many posters, and really you can’t expect everyone here to keep up with nicknames. Not to mention it’s a “funny once” thing.

Sure in mid-complaint you use a strange acronym, what the heck is TWOP?

Television Without Pity

You got me. :smack:
TelevisionWithOutPity.

Used to be useful, now is just a snarkfest. :frowning:

You know, I never thought about it before, but I have a tendency to skip over those, myself. Even though I’m sure I’ve been guilty of posting them at some time or another.

The only thing that has really annoyed me lately is the lameass attempted gotcha posts that go like this:

“So, you’re going to claim that you prefer Diet Coke to wine? Yeah, didn’t think so.”

or

“So, you’re going to claim that you don’t like the smell of roses? Yeah, didn’t think so. But if you did claim that you’d be lying anyway.”

or

“You’re kidding right? But of course you’re kidding because I just know that you wouldn’t say that honestly and even if you say you’re kidding I won’t believe you.”

Oh, oh! What about:

any reference to boards and blogs about SDMB. I can’t wanting so badly to talk behind the backs of the mods or whatever to waste my time that way and, being perfect and all, I can’t imagine anyone else wanting to do so either.

I agree, many of the in-jokes get tiresome quickly, especially “Hi Opal!” It still surfaces from time to time, but I’m glad to see that people have for the most part mellowed out on this one.

I also get annoyed by OP’s in the Pit that otherwise contain no profanity, but at the end, the poster writes, “Oh, and since this is the Pit…
GODDAMN MOTHERFUCKING GOAT-FELCHING CHRIST!!!”

Pit threads where a Doper complains about a particular posting style or practice, only to have several replies containing examples of the offending practice. For example, there was a recent Pit thread about people who post IMDB links but do not identify which movie they are in reference to, so of course several people posted unidentified IMDB links just to be “funny”.

I will admit to having used “BAND NAME!!!” in response to a phrase containing a comical combination of words of a scatological/sexual nature, but once this became tiresome I abandoned doing this. It doesn’t seem to be as common as it once was a few years ago.

The Band name thing is not an SDMB joke, it predates the SDMB and started as far as I know with Dave Barry. I was using it occasionally before I found the Straight Dope or the Message board. This does not mean it will not get tiring, just pointing out it is not an SDMB in-joke.
BTW: we are not even in the pit; we would have got the idea without the demonstration.

I believe that is a legit use of smilies to sum up in only two characters that I was only teasing. Otherwise my nitpick above could be read as being hostile and that was not my intention and the wink works better than long winded dumb paragraphs like this one.

Caricci: Could you please rephrase your post, I am not sure of your meaning. I am not teasing, I really am not sure what you were saying.

Jim

This one is definitely not my favorite, but I’ll hijack just long enough to say I laughed so hard once when Eve did it. She didn’t say “BAND NAME!!!” the way most of us would, but something like “Oh, that would be a good name for a rock band.” It tickled me so much.

I agree in general with what you say, and I agree with the complaint about the unidentified IMDB links, but ironically I think that particular thread was the exception to both peeves. I found the link-speak pretty amusing.

I think this was a reference to the Snark Boards, where people too lame for the Dope hang out and jealously snipe at their betters.
