the ending scene of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
The end of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
I’m glad to see I’m not alone in getting a lump in my throat at a lot of kids movies. But not the movies and scenes you’d think. Not in any Toy Storys, Wall-E or Finding Nemo, for example.
But totally in We Bought a Zoo, Dolphin Tale and Epic. Epic hit my buttons about three times. The Odd Life of Timothy Green, a terrible movie, but it got me.
There’s a movie called A Little Princess that turned this man into a crying little princess in a heartbeat. Oh man, that one’s brutal. My daughter just watches it and thinks it’s cool while I’m sitting there trying not to go in the corner, curl up in the fetal position and bawl my eyes out.
Another animated movie, Mary and Max,got me crying. It is possibly my favorite movie of all-time and criminally underrated.
The ending of The Breakfast Club got me kind of teary.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again and again…
Hands down - the cryfest, non-sports movie champion for guys is:
ARMAGEDDON
-Grace saying goodbye to Harry on the video screen, telling her he’s breaking his promise and not coming home.
-The little boy on the runway who never knew his father until he saw “the salesman” on TV, and he comes running into his arms.
-The shuttle captain, “requesting permission to shake the hand of the daughter…of the bravest man I ever met.”
-The whisper-quiet closeup of Michael Clarke Duncan (RIP), after the asteroid explodes : “Yo Harry - you the man…”
- Ben Affleck telling Harry he loves him, after he shoved him back into the shuttle. “you take care of my little girl now, that’s your job.”
There is no other non-sports movie that has more moments where guys tear up. Marley & Me had one : the end. It’s a Wonderful Life had two : the end, and George’s breakdown in the bar/on the bridge when he begs to live again.
I challenge you Dopers to find another non-sports movie that has more “guy cry” moments. :dubious:
I didn’t cry at all during Armageddon. Afterwards, I cried because I had wasted 2 hours watching such a shitty movie.
Some here to add, if it isn’t too dusty in the thread yet…
Fellowship of the Ring, the death of Boromir
My Girl, the girl giving her impromptu speech at the funeral
Return of the Dragon, Bruce Lee reluctantly having to kill Chuck Norris
Dark Crystal, the podling getting its soul sucked out
Watership Down
The song Bright Eyes
Some that aren’t as well-known, maybe:
Searching for Bobby Fischer: When Kingsley’s character gives Josh his Grandmaster of Chess certificate, AND when Laurence Fishburne yells “THERE IT IS!” during the final chess match.
The Last Starfighter: When Alex’s girlfriend turns away from the flaming wreckage of the truck and spaceship, looks into the night sky, and says “I love you, Alex Rogan.”
The Karate Kid (the original one): As Daniel Larusso strikes the Crane Technique pose.
As mentioned previously, the scene near the end of The Iron Giant. “Superman.”
And big dittoes to the Aragorn’s line “My friends, you bow to no one” near the end of Return of the King.
Flags of Our Fathers got me even more than Saving Private Ryan. As an ex-Marine, I think I felt more of a connection to the characters than most people.
I can’t think of a sports movie that makes me weepy.
I don’t think there’s another movie that affected me that much. Now that I have 3 kids 7, 5, and 3, I try my damnest to be as happy and optimistic as I can be, no matter the circumstances.
Yep, as a musician, that one hit me right in the heart.
Yes, I loved that ending.
You hang in there and stay positive and strong and think of who will be there for your victory party!
Yep, that one got me too.
A couple of my own nominations.
Snoopy Come Home! - has always broken me down since I was a kid. IMHO it’s gotta be the worst children’s film ever.
**Whale Music - **The scene where the whales finally appear to dance with Desmond.
Forrest Gump - All the scenes after Jenny dies.
