Norelco bodygroom and Electric Shaver Battery Issue

I have norelco bodygroom bg2040 that i bought about a few years ago. I also have a philips electric shaver to shave facial hair that i bought years ago as well. I grow very little facial hair.

My electric shaver i noticed months ago seemed to stop holding much of a charge. I would charge it for 8 hours and when i use it, it would last a few minutes… which is still good enough for me. But what i notice was when i charge it for that long… then say I don’t use it and leave it there for few days, next time I use it… it might last a minute or so. Sometimes it might last a half a minute. Is that most likely due to the battery since i had this for many years already? Now there is one culprit that i think might have caused this. For both of the electric shaver and my bodygroom, it comes with the same looking charger. I noticed last time one of the chargers… you see like the inside of the wiring if you know what i mean. Both cables are frayed but i know one of them still can charge though. Could using the fraying cable have caused both of these batteries to go bad? I’m still using it at the moment.

Now the bodygroom. It had worked fine for years without an issue until recently. I charge it for about an hour because that is what the instructions say to do and i always did that. I think only once or twice i mistakenly charged it overnight and forgot to take it out but that time was many years ago… the other time was months ago but i only did it once recently. Then i charge it an hour with no issue. Back then, it would get like 50 minutes i believe on a full charge. Few months ago, i still got a good thirty minutes. But when the pandemic happened, i didn’t want to take a hair cut outside and used the bodygroom to cut my own hair. I used the other end of it and then cut my hair. What i noticed was when i did this, it seemed like i had at most 6 minutes of battery on it when using the other end. Is that normal? But if i used the other end where i shave my armpits/below… i would got like thirty minutes. But then not long ago… when i did a charge of it… when i turned it on… it only turns on for a few seconds… then immediately goes off. But on the back, it doesn’t indicate the battery is low though until when I keep doing this for many minutes. So i could still use it on my armpits and below but it turns off every second so i need to keep pressing it on every second. But if i do it for many minutes, then i notice it would indicate low battery. I had read old reviews on this on amazon where ppl said the battery no longer works after a while.

But is this what they mean by bad battery? Because it does charge… it shows it charging… then once its fully charged, you dont see the green light anymore which means fully charged. But why does it even turn on for a second or so then? Because if battery went bad… wouldn’t that mean when you turn it on… it wouldn’t even turn on at all?

I thought the cause of this for bodygroom had to be one of three reasons

Used it too aggressively for cutting my hair? Many times because i only get a few minutes on it when cutting my hair… i would then immediately recharge it for an hour… then use it again for a few minutes.

Using the frayed cable possibly caused this?

Battery just worn out like normal? Anyone know how many years these things usually get? The thing is i just thought it wasn’t a battery thing because i thought if i used it incorrectly for cutting my own hair.

Thanks.

If nothing else you’ll get a laugh out of this and maybe an answer.

I’m confused what do you mean by this?

Idk I swear I saw something on tv where that guy actually talked in-depth about the battery issue with the norelco razors, but if I ever did I cant find the video now, sorry.

Are you talking about the norelco bodygroom though? I don’t think i ever seen a commerical on this ever.

I had a similar problem and found out that if you charge the shaver, then leave the cord plugged into the shaver but the other end not plugged into the wall, the battery will discharge.

If you take the charging cable out of the shaver, the battery will hold the charge.

This may or may not be your problem but it happens.

The frayed cord should be replaced, but since you’ve had the shaver for so long, maybe call this the end of it’s life and treat yourself to a new one?

Hello. I always unplug the cord from the shaver after I’m done using it though… but i never thought of that. I mean leaving the cord plugged into the shaver but not connected to the wall would cause an issue?

Actually im a bit confused with your statement. Because whenever i unplug the shaver from the outlet, i remove the shaver from the thing stuck to it… i would thought most ppl do that?

Well im having a tough time getting a new one because im currently out of the country at the moment. So i wanted to know if i could fix it. Do you know if by any chance using it to cut your hair few times could cause this? The other side… you could use it to cut hair right?

Every couple, three years, I take my shaver apart, unsolder the old battery(s) and solder new ones, of the same type, in place. It’s like getting a new shvaver, but much cheaper. I’m pretty sure this voids the warranty, but it beats heck out of having to spring for a new shvaver just because the “non user serviceable” battery wore out.

Hi there. Well is that process to do it hard? I heard about that.

But based on my description, my battery went bad right? But if battery goes bad… wouldn’t that mean it can’t even charge? And wouldn’t turn on? Or does battery mean bad means it turns on but short time like here one second?

As a rechargeable battery gets old, it will hold less and less charge, eventually getting to where you are. Replacing the battery should get you running like new again.

there were times when i would put it in a box with other hair cutting items and leave it near a plug, plugged into the wall. then when it was done charging i unplugged it from the wall but left the cord attached to the shaver and put the box away. somehow leaving the cord attached like that caused the battery to discharge, possibly because the wall wart draws a small current or allows leakage somehow. i’m not well versed in the mechanism that would occur.

but like squink said, it’s 90% likely your battery is just old and no longer taking a full charge.
