Someone on this board, and I forgot who, recommended this book. So I got it. And I read it. And it was, indeed, worth the money.
Thank you, whoever you are. It was hilarious. The stories were completely self consistent and logical. Of COURSE Thor rides a motorcycle these days, and will use a laser gun if he can.
I love this book, and have recommended it on this Board before. I see the author, Jane Sibley, at ARISIA in Boston every year, where she sells copies of her books (and puts a couple of copies of mine out), along with sea salt and spices. She hosts a mythology convention every year that I haven’t been able to get away for yet.
*Her other books are serious books on mythology. She really should write another funny one.
Love the book, know the author [we have been in the SCA for decades - both in Connecticut though different baronies] Auntie Arwen is a hoot in person. FOr a few years I was handing out autographed copies to everybody I knew for Christmas:p
Y’all need to tell her to write more humorous books. What cracked me up was that the book’s setting was exactly how the tales got passed on traditionally…a friend or relative would tell stories to the kids, as a means of entertaining the kids, and of course the stories changed over time. So naturally Uncle Einar was going to put the old gods in a modern setting, so that the kids would be able to relate to the stories better.
Folk tales/fairy tales/myths change. I love to read retold fairy stories.
Jut popping in to say that I ordered the book and it arrived today. I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet but I had friends over for dinner and the one was so intrigued he bought the kindle edition on his phone and the other refused to play cards after dinner until she’d finished the story she was reading. I’m gonna guess it’s worth the money, then.
