North Carolina vs. Ohio "Tag Wars"

So North Carolina is proud of the fact that they were “First in Flight” as the state liscence tag suggests. But Ohio claims to be the “Birthplace of Aviation.” Something isn’t quite right here. I don’t see how both states can make their respective claims. Who flew first, NC or Ohio?

The wright brothers bicycle shop where the plane was built is in dayton ohio, but thier first flight was in kitty hawk NC. So the plane was made (or born) in ohio and first flew in north carolina.

Speaking as a resident of Ohio, I don’t see how this state can make the claim as a “Birthplace of Avaiation”.

Perhaps, since the Wright brothers were born in Ohio, the license plate should read…

“Birthplace of Aviators”

I love this little dilemna, since I live in NC, but grew up in OH. Basically, The Wright Bros. built most of the equipment in Dayton, Oh and then came out to Kitty Hawk where there was enough wind for the airplane to work. I beleive that both are correct, and therefore I argue each side depending on to whom I am talking.

But, it really cheeses off the North Carolinians.

I live in NC and I think it is much ado about nothing.

The same argument has come up with the new state quarters. The NC one says “First Flight” - some people thought they tried to make Ohio happy by leaving out the “in” but that is not the case. NC got to issue the quarter first since we were one of the 13 original states. (the quarters are issued in the order the states joined the union)

and I have a valid, rational, and statesmanlike solution to this problem. We, in North Carolina, should continue to use the phrase “First In Flight.” Ohio can use the phrase “Oh My Godjesus, We Weren’t Even One Of The Original 13 Colonies. We Should Have Called Our State ‘Linda Lickadick Land’.” And everyone goes home happy. Except, of course, the people in Ohio (Ohiaonas? Ohioans? Oh, Hiya Maude!), but who really cares? Pas #1.

After all, two wrongs don’t make a Wright.

My suggestion for an Ohio motto is “Rivers Aflame!”

From Merriam-Webster…

Flight, definition 3a:

Thus North Carolina is First in Flight.

Aviation, definition 3:

Thus Ohio is the Birthplace of Aviation.

You can forget the arguing because Ohio has started issuing new, dreadfully ugly license plates that say “1803 - 2003 Ohio’s Bicentenial” or something. They look really dumb, with a solid red stripe across the top, a large white center, and a solid blue line at the bottom. And are 2 years premature! I didn’t start noticing them until after Sept. 11, however, Perhaps this is Ohio’s way of making drivers show mandatory patriotism?

Hey now, it was only one river. Still, I’d hate to look out the window and see the river burning. I mean, what’re you gonna do, pour water on it?

As a current resident of Ohio, (I’m not from Ohio, I just live here), I was unaware that there was any controversy. As noted in several posts, above, both statements are accurate, so who is complaining? (I suppose the French could lodge a protest in honor of the brothers Montgolfier, but I suspect that most people will recognize the implied “self-powered, heavier-than-air” modifiers that have to be understood for both license plates.)

yeeesh

OK, so we provided the parts, the assembly, and the two guys who did it. North Carolina provided the wind. I won’t deny NC’s role, but don’t you’uns have something better to be proud of?

And for the record, the Cuyahoga is not the only river ever to have burned. It’s just the only one to have ever spontaneously burned. And the last time it happened was deliberate. Really.

You haven’t been to NC in awhile, have you? Charlotte’s big claim to fame is that we have alot of banks.

What about that 3-way intersection of Eidleweild Street, Eidleweild Street and Eidleweild Street?

Charlotte’s big fame came from Jim and Tammy Faye Baaker and the Pass the Loot club.
