I do believe there was an element of control freakiness involved in this particular case. I don’t care about an editor making changes according to his or her editorial judgement (and if you do care about such things, you’re in the wrong line of work, IMHO), but it’s really annoying when, as you say, it’s just to show who’s in charge or to just piss on it to leave your scent.
