Northeast Dopers - BJ's vs Costco

After 11 years in San Diego, a confluence of circumstances has landed my wife and me back on the east coast. We’re now in the coastal region of eastern Connecticut, and are in the process of unpacking all our boxes and making sure that the furniture is set up how we like it.

We’ve been Costco members for quite a few years, and I was quite distressed to learn that our nearest Costco is about an hour away, in New Britain. In San Diego, we were within ten minutes’ drive of two locations. We made a trip out the New Britain store to stock up our fridge and pantry, but I’d prefer not to drive so far all the time.

Then I noticed that we have a place within about ten minutes of us called BJ’s Wholesale. It appears to be something of a regional competitor to Costco. Of course, I could go in there and check it out for myself, and I’ll do that in the next week, but I thought I’d consult the collective experience of the SDMB to see what folks have to say about it.

So, what’s BJ’s like? Can it serve as a reasonable replacement for Costco? Or should I suck it up and do the two-hour roundtrip oncce every couple of weeks or so? Any and all advice is welcome.
