Northern Dopers, have you turned your heat on yet?

Seeing those pictures made me so happy. I worked at that mountain for several years, and skied there many, many years more.

Twice. Just for an hour, or so, to take the edge off.

I’ve always wondered if southerners resist turning on the AC out of principle.

It already snowed in Northern Ontario.
:: shiver ::

I’ve never turned it off. If it gets too hot inside, I open a window.

Oh man…eleventy billion more votes for the electric mattress pad.

When my mattress pad gets put on, THEN we can declare it cold out.

NE Ohio. Not yet, but it’s getting a little chilly at night.

We’re not far enough north; Mother Nature’s turning on the heat for us. Supposed to be up around 90° tomorrow.

Nope.
Ottawa, Canada. I still have the windows open, drops to 10c at night. I love crisp weather. I’m looking forward to my back country one week hiking trip in Algonquin Park mid October.

No. I haven’t even taken the air conditioners out yet. I have some windows open. I won’t take the AC out until October 1, and then the heat won’t go on until November 1, unless it gets super cold. The house is South facing, so as long as we have sunny days, I have the curtains open and it is nice in the house. I like it cool. I set the thermostat at 61 unless it gets super chilly or I am having company over.

There was snow in Terrace Bay overnight for Wednesday morning, but I didn’t get out that way until Thursday morning, so no ski joss for me. Nice wind Thursday and Friday, but still no more snow. I wish we could move directly from summer to winter.

My furnace has switched on a few times in the last month, and has been on most of the time in September.

Its only been chilly for 2 days here, so no heat yet.

But… when the tree Dept took down a tree from across the street today, I did stock up on free fire wood.

I refuse to turn on the heat until Nov 1. It is cold; but I have forced hot air and I hate it. I do use a portable electric heater and preheat the bath before taking my shower when the indoor temp drops to 60.

We had the coldest September 19 temperature in recorded history in Ottawa yesterday at 0.5 degrees C.

My heat’s been on for about a week now.

It was 48 degrees this morning when I went for a swim. Pulling the AC out today.

I go as long as I can without heat and, once on, only during the day (and usually only for a few hours) when necessary. November or December is usually when I turn the heat on. I lived in one place where I almost never had to turn on the heat. Was able to keep my window cracked for fresh air most of the winter too.

Now I live with my sis, though, and this will be our first winter in this apartment. The building is only six years old, so hopefully it’s well insulated, but they installed some cruddy little in-wall heaters that, I understand, are energy hogs. I sure hope we don’t have to use them much.

No. We’re in Central New York state. We are still using the air conditioners in the windows, set on ‘fan’, not cool. It’s been in the 40’s, chill and damp a couple of mornings, but it warms up into the 60’s during the day. We still have many days of 70’s to come. It has been known to snow in October, so the time is coming. One year it was dark, hot, humid and windy for some days around Halloween, had to dig out a few packed away summer things, but I didn’t mind. I knew it wasn’t going to last.

This time of year I am a squirrel, busy putting things away for the winter. Making a list: paper products, cans and boxes, cat food and litter, medicines, coffee, road salt for the driveway, soda, emergency booze :stuck_out_tongue: . Just in case. Nothing I hate more than driving in a snowstorm for some dumb everyday thing.

North Central Mass here; no main heat yet, but I did turn on my little space heater next to my desk the other evening while I was working. We’ve got a few loads of wood in and more to come in and then some more to gather. It’s definitely getting to be that time. We’ll have the woodstove going and not put the heat on til the real dead of winter- or when the wood runs out!

Another voter for the electric mattress pad. Best Christmas gift ever. LOVE that thing. We have a queen size with dual controls so I can be happy at a 5 and he can be happy at a 2.

Thanks to this thread, you people have me looking up heated mattress pads!

Do it! I am resisting doing the whole rotate the mattress, put on the heated pad, but it won’t be long now.

I thought of this thread yesterday and today when I turned on the electric heat in my subterranean lair just to…um…see if it is still working, yeah, that’s the ticket.

We never turn the furnace off, either (we have it set for 66F - we like a cool house). Most summers it stays off until October or so. Not this year - like others have said, it was on for most of September already.
