It's 36 and snowing. Should I turn on the heat?

Poll to follow if I can figure out how this works.

It’s 36F and snowing outside, but still fairly comfortable inside, if you’re wearing a sweater, slippers and a blanket.

Should I turn on the heat?

Thunder snow!

Letting you know in case it influences your answer.

Watch out for hail!

turn on the heat when your hands get uncomfortable at the keyboard.

There is more than one way to get warm, you know…

Just turn the heat on. Really.

I turn the heat on when it drops below 60. So yes, you should have it on.

Well, it’s 34 degrees now. High of 40 today, a few flurries. I turned the heat on because my husband likes it about 70 inside, but I turn it down at night. I’m hot all the time!

Turn the heat on at about 40 so your pipes do not freeze. [That is what I do and then I heat with a wood burning stove if I get cold.]

It was a foregone conclusion that the heat would be turned on.
Even though it’s still around 60 in here, due to great insulation and new windows.

Thanks for the input!!

I’m in Michigan and when the temps start dropping below 50, the heat comes on. In fact, it just kicked on, so it must be below 50.

I like a cooler rather than too-warm house, but 36 and snowing? Hell yes, turn it on.

(Seriously, it’s snowing in Boston right now? Sweet!)

It stopped snowing a little while ago. It’s not actually cold enough for the snow to stick. I told the furnace it can come on if warranted, but since it’s after 9, and above 60 in here it hasn’t kicked in yet. Tomorrow at 7:15am it probably will. Off to bed!

Why does the outside temperature matter? Turn on the heat if it’s cold inside.

I’ve got the thermostat turned on to 50. I’m wearing a fleece vest and fingerless gloves while typing this. With the price of oil soaring, I’m going to hoard it for as long as humanly possible.

Too late, I guess, but HELLS to the naw. I don’t turn on my heat until ice forms on the inside of the windows.

Is it because I’m just that hardcore? Of course not! That would be stupid. You should turn on the heat when A) you’re cold, or B) you’re aware that your failure to do so may precipitate hypothermic death. It’s just that for me, and all other freaks therelike, B tends to precede A by a fair amount. Given that you claim to be comfy at 36F, I took the assumption that you are one of we aforementioned freaks. If so, wear the mantle with pride — just don’t wear it to your icy grave.

you can go quite a ways with layering tops and pants. insulating socks and slippers. wear a hat or hood. the rest of your body is warm and dumps heat out through your fingers.

Seriously, y’all? People around here think I’m a cheapskate crazy person because my heat is set to go on at 65!

This is why I love my automatic thermostat. When it switches on, I know it’s cold enough for it to do so!

I also set it at 65 when I am home.

I turn the heat on to get the chill off then it goes back off. Oil is too expensive right now to turn it on when the temp hits 50. But I’m from New England (USA ) so I’m use to it. We will leave it at 50/52 over night so the pipes don’t freeze in case the temp drops even more but that is how it goes all winter for us. Heat during the day when we are home and lots of blankets at night. It is a way to save money and we don’t really suffer I have a two layers on right now and warm socks. Just always open shades/blinds in the morning to let the sun in (free heat).

In the fall we play a game to see how long we can go before we turn the heat on. This year I won; my wife had me turn it on when the indoor temp dropped to about 60. We usually keep the thermostat at 63-65 in the winter.
