I soooo cold

Here I am. In my basement. Attempting to work.

But noooooo

I have the Three Stooges from the local gas company moving the meter from inside my house outside. AND my dad is here making extenders for the heat vents which (until now) have been up in the ceiling. AND my grandniece is here “supervising” everybody’s work, along with watching Calliou. Suffice it to say, no work is getting done. I did enter the Girl Scout Cookie Store raffle (so they can hawk them at stores). I’m here now. I did play a game of Snood.

Of course, due to the meter change, I have NO heat. It’s 20F outside. They have a window open to pass things through to each other and to gab. The heat won’t be turned back on for another 3-4 hours.

No heat also means no stove. No stove means no lunch. I had a cold turkey sammich. Which makes me colder.

I’m in sweats, long sleeved shirt, sweatshirt, “regular” socks and wool socks. I have two blankets covering me.

And I’m soooo cold.

Light something convienient on fire.

Go sit in the car and turn on the heater?

Make some hot cocoa in your electric kettle/microwave?

Grab a book and head to the gym. Strip. Get into the sauna. Rinse off and cool down in the shower. Repeat.

I’d just stand in the shower for 4 hours until the place warmed up. Sitting in the car with the heat cranked is a good idea too. Heck, just drive to a nice place to eat and go there.

I lived through 2 winters in Michigan and I think living in those conditions is insane. I was always cold. I’m cold now and its 65 outside.

I take it that you don’t have a space heater. I’ve got 3 of them, and they’ve been mighty helpful during times when it’s just freezing, with no hope of improvement any time soon.

If you get one of the good ceramic ones, you could be pretty cozy in a medium-sized room. I strongly recommend it. Though, since you’re living in Minnesota, you probably know all the good strategies for staying warm already.

Hallelujah I have HEAT down here!

I am kicking myself for blushing and acting like a complete ninny around the ever-so-cute gas company guy though. I’m 35 and still blush like a 12 year old. Sad, truly.

I wish I could’ve left, but I was working. I would’ve had to shut down the computer which would’ve gigged me on hours (must show 8 1/2 hours, but the system goes down at 6pm). I couldn’t have taken a shower because no hot water.

My dad installed vent extenders on the whopping two heat ducts so now the heat actually comes into the room.

When the heat came back one I almost cried. Seriously. When you warm your hands over candles to maintain mobility, heat is a godsend.

Well, I guess it’s time for me to start feeling pathetic. I’m sitting here(southern Cali) in 48 degree temperature outside(and I am outside) 4 layers of jacket and 3 layers of quilt and shivering my brains out(what’s left of them). What temperature is it there again?

I’m pretty sure she said it was 20[SUP]o[/SUP] F.

[hijack]saturnine0, what are you doing that you’re outside in that refreshing weather AND posting?[/hijack]

With all them blankets on, I bet he/or she is enjoying a great view or just getting sun on their face. I’m imagining something really pretty with mountains.

My view is old people playing bad golf on a public golf course, not much incentive to go hang out on back porch here.

No, the computer happens to be on the back porch, though if I lean wwwaaaaaaayyyyy back and look to the left I can see mountains.

48! It won’t be that warm here again until late April

this past March my furnace went out. I needed a new one so my brother in law installed one the next day. that night it was awful, it got down to about 45 in my house. I really couldn’t tell, because it was so cold the numbers in the digital thermostat wouldn’t work right. My feet were frozen. But now i have a high-efficiency furnace and it’s working great.

This morning I booted up and my home page has the temperature. It said 1 degree. That’s scary.

You poor people. How do you live in such temperatures?

Right now, I’m sitting around with the windows open because it’s only about 60 outside. I was happy this last week cause I was able to turn the damn A/C off. Going up to 75 ( :stuck_out_tongue: ) on Wednesday, so I might have to turn it back on, depending on how humid it gets – it’s supposed to rain.

My sympathies on your heat problems. We were 2 days without heat this week due to our landlords ineptitude. Also, not to preach, but did you know that Snood is spyware? Get yourself Ad Aware or Spybot to take care of that sort of thing.

I woke up this morning and it was 1 here, as well (Detroit area, FYI). But the heat wave’s a-comin; it’s up to 3 now! And me without my bikini.

I’m just waiting for our landlord’s ineptitude to cause heat loss. We’ve been without electricity once and without water once since August.

Also, that_darn_cat, I’m surprised about Snood. When I read this thread previously I was excited that Snood was still around, as I used to play it at an ex’s place all the time. I downloaded it last night, and just read this. I’ve now run both Ad-Aware and Spybot, with updated definitions, and they found nothing. Is there something that they could be missing? I really hope not, because I love the damn game. But I love my computer more.

We just had a woodstove installed this fall, and we’ve only had to turn the furnace on at night a couple of times. We plan on using it as our primary heat source.

I love lighting a fire in the woodstove. It keeps the whole house nice and toasty.
They’re calling for light snow later today. I love winter.

I’m cold, too.

Propane is $1.50/gallon, plus tax. I’m trying to use as little as possible,

Note: In spite of my current joblessness, the situation is not dire. I’m just trying to economise a bit. (I’m not going to economise on food, though, after last month’s bout with food poisoning after eating old salsa.) (You Know Who You Are, thank you very, very much. But please don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine. You’re all wonderful people. :o )

Anyway…

I have my fleecey slippers on, and a thermal shirt. I’ve turned on the heater to a comfortable 65°F. (I’ll warm it up more when my ‘special friend’ gets here.) I have an electric blanket and two quilts on my bed, so I don’t need the heater at night.

This house was originally heated by baseboard electic heaters and a wood stove built into the living room fireplace. The guy I bought the house from disconnected the heaters because they cost too much. The chimney needs a new liner, and it’s 2½ feet too short; so the wood stove isn’t usable. My friend could spend $1,200 fixing the chimney, or he could spend $1,400 for the propane heater. He chose the latter. There’s a fireplace in the big bedroom, but I’m using that room for storage. The chimney there is in poor condition, as previous owners allowed ivy to grow on it. The ivy has been killed, but I have no idea how much damage it’s done.

One of these days I’ll turn the big bedroom into a library and fix the fireplace/chimney. I’ll have the front fireplace fixed as well. But for now, it’s only a few months until warmer weather.

PS: As I typed this, the heater has done its work.
