I just finished it and I have to say … if he continues this type of work, Joe Hill is going to be even greater that his father (Stephen King.)
There’s a meta level to the book as well. Hill creates such a convincing world and such memorable characters, that I didn’t really want to leave it when I finished it. He created a Christmasland and now, all we can do is wait for Charlie Manx to come back.
And Hill has one thing that his father seems to have forgotten … he knows how to end a book.
It was a wonderful read … highly recommended!
Posting without having read the OP fully – 'cause I’m only 2/3rds of the way through the book and avoiding possible spoilers – but I agree with the opening thought. About a hundred pages in I said to my husband "He writes more like his father used to, before his father got all those literature ambitions and started taking twenty pages to describe in incredible detail things that we didn’t need to hear about in anything like that detail
My fingers are crossed that he knows how to write a decent ending. Way too many SK books just sort of limp to ending.
I haven’t read anything by Joe Hill yet, but I love Stephen King - I will definitely check this out.
By the way, in all fairness, Stephen King never forget how to write endings because he never knew in the first place.
Alright, I’ve requested this book and “Horns” from my local library. We’ll see about this guy!
When an Amazon reviewer complained about graphic rape scenes in NOS4A2, I regretted pre-ordering the book and considered sending it back without opening the box. (Amazon will let you do that, bless them.)
But I loved Joe’s short story collection, and what I’ve read of the Locke and Key graphic novel, and I liked his other two books, so I decided to read the thing for myself. The reviewer was talking out of her ass. There’s not a single rape scene in the book – just Bing’s thoughts and memories, and they’re more skeevy than graphic. I wonder how many people passed on the book because of what she wrote.
The book is long but it didn’t feel padded, the characters were well developed, and the ending was very satisfying.
You guys who are reading on the Kindle are missing a short extra chapter. In the print version, it’s the Note on the Typeface at the very end, after the Acknowledgements. It’s not in the Kindle. So next time you’re in a bookstore, grab a copy and read that little bit.
Thanks for posting that, AuntiePam. I had decided not to read NOS4A2 for the same reason you did. Now that I know that there are no graphic rape scenes, I have ordered the book from Amazon. Everything I’ve read by Joe Hill has been excellent, and I look forward to this!
I finished this last week and really enjoyed it…he definitely has his father’s touch from the old days, and I was happy with the ending. Also, for extra credit he sneaked in a reference to his dad’s next book.
