Nostalgic American Beverages?

That’s how I remember it.

Yep… I almost brought that up earlier, but didn’t want to slow down the Bev-a-palooza.

I most remember the Red Apple Soda. At the time, it was my favorite.

the Jc caferteria i went to sold the one liters for a buck … and apparently when i was banned from buying them sales went down 25 percent …

I don’t remember the Red Apple flavor from my youth. I also don’t remember if the cases of 24 were already a variety or if my parents mixed and matched. If the latter, someone in my family overestimated our collective desire for “Creme”.

This thread has been going on for a while so I don’t remember if anyone mentioned Canfield’s Diet Chocolate Fudge. I remember it being a super hit back when it was first introduced, early '70s. It was made by a bottler based here close to Chicago. Still available, I guess because I see it is on Amazon.

Anyone remember the original Mello Yello? Coke brought it out in 1979 to compete with Mountain Dew. Citrus with extra caffeine. Still available from amazon.

yes! my first favorite soda as a kid … grandma wouldn’t buy mt dew cause she said it tasted like “horse piss” but mello yello was ok

still better than surge … last time i had it was in a coke free style machine in a jack in the box

actually tried a bottle of sasparilla made with cane sugar … actually did taste like rootbeer … just not as sweet

true story … in 1989 when Shasta had its 100 anniversary they had a huge contest but you had to look for certain words in the bottom of the can well my brother didn’t know about the contest until i picked up the cans he trhew down and read the side and looked in and seen the word to win exactly 100 cans of soda we jumped up and down excited … we finally won something

Tho we were disappointed we thought we were going to get sent 100 physical cans of soda (we were 10 and 12 ) they just sent us a stack of coupons for free 6 packs that equaled to 100 cans… and we had to pay sales tax … but still basically free soda!

Hell yeah! I’ve seen it in those Freestyle machines.

Now know I dont know how true it is but i was told that a lot of places with freestyle machines started to have a minimum purchase before you got to use them them because people were going in just to drink all the varieties of soda

One place even started charging per half hour like a cover charge …

Thanks! I never knew what to call those.

I’ve only read about 1/3 of the thread, but I did a search, and I am kind of surprised that no one else has mentioned they remember this.

If I remember right, it was incredibly sweet, even for the 70s. From checking the wiki page, it’s other tag line “The Thirst Crusher!” may the inspiration for “Brawndo - The Thirst Mutilator!” Dang. I used to look forward to buying one when we visited the grocery store.

My grandfather, from the Dayton, Ohio area, always referred to Barq’s Red Cream Soda as redpop. I don’t think he ever called it anything else.

My grandfather always referred to all soft drinks as “sody warter”.

I loved New York Seltzer when it was popular in the late '80s. AFAIK, it only came in glass bottles. The label was made of some strange material that could only be peeled off the bottle in circumferential strips.

I miss the “Old Tyme Jamaican Style” brand of ginger beer, and their other varieties. They used to be regularly available in my area, but vanished long ago. I haven’t seen the product in a store since I was in Ottawa, Canada years ago, and blithely smuggled in some cases of the stuff. I see it advertised online and some claims are made that Wal-Mart carries it here and there, but I’ve never found it in their stores.

One can buy that in Southern Ontario. It is pleasantly strong, quite refreshing.

Tang! drink of astronauts, Tab 1 calorie cola and a Yoo-hoo like fake chocolate drink I can’t remember name, M summint.

I prefer the Brit style Ginger Beer and the best I’ve found here is Bundaberg which is Australian. Its pricey though and only in specialty markets generally.

I had older friends that used to brew it themselves. That was a real treat.

Bundaberg is plentiful in the midwest, for some reason. I’ve a case of it at the moment. Cock and Bull is also nice, so’s Reeds Extra-ginger brew, And Fever Tree makes a nice one too. I’m always on the lookout for a decent ginger beer.
