Nostalgic American Beverages?

and @Qadgop_the_Mercotan, the Target website shows they carry the Bundaberg ginger beer. I have had the Fevertree and it is good also. I drink their light tonic water without gin and enjoy it, FWIW if you’re looking for a thirst quenching less sweet drink.

Better yet, they list Saranac Ginger Beer and for a far better price. I’ve heard that is excellent. Sadly neither is at my local Targets.

So do I, I’ve a few bottles in the soda fridge right now

I found this very interesting. I’m happy to drink a mug of hot broth or tomato juice/soup. https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/soda-fountain-drinks-recipes

That IS interesting! I love the picture with that article.

Ummm… this drink does not sound very appetizing: “Reeking Smatch” (a blend of clam juice, cream, and ginger)

WINK! “The sassy one, from Canada Dry!” Grapefruit flavored, as I recall.

The only place I ever had Bubble-Up was the old La Pizzaria, next to the Vogue Theater at Lake and Nicollet in Minneapolis (now long gone).

Is bottled Green River available in carbonated and noncarbonated, the way it came out of vending machines at the movies?

I remember the creme soda they used to sell at Super America. It was blue, like Windex. Do they still make it?

They still make it, but I haven’t seen it in local stores in a while, but I recommend Polar’s Diet Double Fudge. I used it to make egg creams just by adding milk.

supposedly rocket fizz makes one too … so ill probably try it one day

Your friends were probably talking about Faygo Redpop. Faygo is a Great Lakes-area local soda maker that makes some unusual flavors that has a devoted fanbase. Insane Clown Posse references the stuff in its songs, so their fans are big Faygo drinkers. I live well outside their distribution area, but my local Aldi sometimes has some Faygo, but I’ve never seen the Redpop.

actually thanks to winco and walmart you can get faygo here in ca occasionaly …

There used to be an orange soft drink called Bireley’s, What was unusual about it was that it came in a bottle with a crown seal like a carbonated drink, but it had no carbonation. I liked the stuff. Apparently the brand has been kept alive by the Asahi company in Japan. I don’t know whether what Asahi makes is similar to the old stuff.

Saranac brews great beers as well as their ginger beer. I recently bought a 12 pack as a vodka mixer👍

I’m a big fan of Saranac but rarely see their products anymore.

Saranac and Bundaberg are both Australian, right? A bit off topic but I have always wondered why there seems to be no importation of Australian beers. My liquor store has beer from almost every country you can think of but never anything from Oz. Why is that?

Saranac is upstate NY. I think Utica.

Good question. I used to be able to get Castlemaine XXXX and Victoria Bitter in the states, but I haven’t seen them around in decades. Of course, 4 of the largest selling beers in Oz are Carlsberg, Heineken, Bud and Bud Light. Around the same time they stopped importing the best British beers to the colonies as well. Probably a plot to make us start using a superfluous “u.”

Can you buy half pint cardboard cartons of milk? A standard in school lunches, I can’t remember seeing these for sale. I don’t drink milk and only use a little occasionally for cooking and sometimes have to toss the remains of a bottle. I’ve seen them at hotel breakfast counters but not for retail sale.

I went to a concert like 25 years ago at the House of Blues in Chicago. Everything and everyone was drenched in the stuff and I don’t mean I got some on my shirt. I didn’t want my companions to get back into my car since everyone was so sticky and stainy from all the Faygo flying. Otherwise, a great show. It’s inconceivable they could be invited back for another performance. What a mess.

Correct. I’ve been to Saranac tap takeovers (pre-COVID).

I wish. When I need milk for a recipe I buy the smallest available container and look for ways to use it up before it’s garbage.

'xactly.

Well, if you’re going to include obscure non-American beverages in this reminiscence, why not include some British bevvies?

Tizer, Irn-Bru (for Scots and Geordies),
Vimto, Lucozade, Dandelion & Burdock, Ribena

Or South American ones?
Inka Kola, Jarritos, Postobon, horchata…

Remarkably, you can find all of these in my hometown. Whether they are worth finding is a question for another day.
