I found a book in a library that outdoes all the other books meniioned above, something I’ve never even heard of let alone seen. Michael Eury’s Hero-a-Go-Go: Campy Comic Books, Crimefighters & Culture of the Swinging Sixties.
Dozens of “superheroes” no one has ever heard of as well. Fruitman, a fruit stand vendor who could turn into any fruit. Sinestro, Boy-Friend, no relation to a Lantern of any color. Presidents with superheroes. Jerry Lewis with superheroes. Animated series with superheroes or not with superheroes. Books, television, movies, Broadway with comic book ties. Cowsils.
Either this is the ultimate 60s nostalgia or Exhibit A in the case against comic books being literature. Weirdness extraordinaire.
