not dead yet....

but still stinking up the joint.

For every person like George Burns, who actually was a more likeable character in his late years, it seems there are several fossilized, irritating and/or offensive individuals who can’t bring themselves to exit the public stage.

Number One on my list is Paul Harvey, who is 82 but just signed a new 10-year contract to continue his radio show, which has been clogging up my radio dial since at least the Coolidge administration. This means an indefinite gauntlet of folksy right-wingisms and nauseatingly personalized ads (how much longer can I endure the guilt of not having purchased a Bose wave radio, which could Change My Life?).

Strom Thurmond is in a category by himself. In this case, I’m mainly worried that during an upcoming Senate hearing, there will be a spontaneous implosion, and horrified bystanders will look up to see his dentures clacking away amidst a pile of ashes.

Other candidates for the dust bin of history (the entertainment world beckons)?

p.s. sorry, Cannon
