Anyone heard any update on that young college kid who decided that he would not speak for a year? I thought he had a website, but can’t seem to locate it. I think he began his silence sometime before the first of Janauary 2001.

I think it sounds like a wonderful idea… but I gaurentee it that he speaks to himself while he is alone…
This reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode (sorry, I don’t remember the title).
A man at a prestigious social club is tired of listening to a fellow clubber yapping away all day. All he does is talk and talk and talk. Finally, so annoyed is he that he bets the talker a fairly large sum of money that he can’t keep quiet for a year. The talker accepts the bet. A living quarters is set up in the club where the man can be observed (and listened to) all year long. At the appointed date, the now-ex-talker enters the room.
Unfortunately, however, during the course of the year the bettor’s business goes south. It’s not, however, public knowledge that he cannot pay off the debt should he lose. At that point (I believe it was about three months into the deal so far) he offers to let the ex-talker out of the deal. He rebuffed. Every few days he tries to get the ex-talker to call the deal off. He’s refused at every request.
Finally, the end of the year arrives…

…and the ex-talker emerges from his year-long prison. He silently goes over to the bettor expecting him to pay up. The bettor is now forced to confess that he does not have the money. He feels terrible about it, but there’s nothing he can do. The ex-talker just stares at him angrily. “Say something!” says the bettor. The ex-talker pulls at this turtleneck to reveal a scar on his neck. In a note, he explained that he knew that he’d never be able to shut up for a year. So, before he entered his “cage” he had his vocal cords cut. This way he’d be sure to win and collect the money.
