And to think you once said you didn’t know much about art!
You have good taste, I’ll say that for you.
To be honest with you, in my mind mostly. I only began to develop an interest in art and painting a couple of years ago and I’m still very much in the learning stages. I’ve been teaching myself how to paint by making copies of work I find online and in magazines, etc. I spend a lot of time on them and I try to make them look as much like the original as possible in the belief that doing so is the way to arrive at excellence. Most of these I have either sold (if they’ve passed into the public domain); others I’ve given to family and friends.
Most of what I’ve been painting are reproductions of vintage French and Italian advertising posters, some art-deco and pop-art pieces, and a couple of geometric abstract that were originally painted by Frank Sinatra. I’m also working on a copy of Vincent Van Gogh’s Vase with Twelve Sunflowers. I’m working to make it as exact a copy as possible and so far I’ve been very pleased with how it’s going.
However, as I read once in an interview with Linda Ronstadt, “It’s hard in the beginning because your ability doesn’t come up to your taste.” And that’s pretty much where I am now. There are lots of things I’d like to do but I have to develop the skills first.
There is also the problem that arises due to the fact that I’m pretty much the same way about art as I am with wine and music: I like almost all of it…which means I have to develop a wide range of skills in order to be able to paint in a wide range of styles.
Sigh It’s not easy bein’ me.
(Please forgive the smilie. I felt it was necessary to convey to others who may read this that I wasn’t being serious.)
