Notarized letters in Canada: legal question

I have to send a “notarized letter” to get a registrar to transfer ownership of a domain from me to someone else.

What makes a letter notarized? Can any laywer write a document for me? Or does it have to be a notary?

I happened to be talking to my lawyer when I read this, and his [unofficial, I-am-not-your-lawyer-consult-one-in-your-jurisdiction] answer is that it means the same thing in Canada as it does in the US: the letter must be notarized by a notary.

However, in Canada, most lawyers are also notaries, with the major exception being Quebec where a notary is a special type of lawyer.

I presume that Kansas Man is in, well, Kansas, and that he is asking about sending a notarized letter to Canada. Not sure why my response requires a “however” here.

Sorry, Cerowyn, wasn’t trying to be snarky. I wasn’t sure if Kansas Man was really in Kansas, or whether he’s in Canada and just likes the name. His profile doesn’t give a location, and the title does say “in Canada”. I was just trying to give a little extra information.

Certainly, any Canadian registrar who wants something notarized is going to expect to see a notary’s seal on the document.

Again, sorry if I offended.

notary or a lawyer who is also a notary.

notary is usually cheaper.
