Note to Republicans: Running against the President doesn't equal treason

Pre-rant note: This is addressed to Republicans since ‘Conservative’ and ‘Republican’ aren’t the same.

“The Constitution of the United States, Art. III, defines treason against the United States to consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid or comfort. This offence is punished with death. By the same article of the Constitution, no person shall be convicted of treason, unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court.”

Now… onto the various claims I’ve heard.

“Instead of voting for any of the Demonrat candidates and leaders, we should work to ensure that they be arrested and tried for treason.”

“Anyone who understands the definition of treason will understand that the betrayal of trust by giving aid and comfort to our enemies, as the Demonrat candidates and leaders are, is the very definition of treason”

Kiddos… there’s a reason that treason is defined.

So we don’t haul in people who dare to oppose the President.

There’s a need for context with the definition here.

Aiding and comforting is out of context. It doesn’t mean ‘making them feel good’.

Look at the context: “or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid or comfort.”

adhering - ‘to give support or maintain loyalty’

aid in this world would be weapons or information. comfort in the 18th century was housing. Basically, if you let some terrorists hang out in your apartment.

If the right is so sure of this treason. They would file charges. But, any lawyer with half a brain would get the Democrats off quickly.

I agree completely, I’m just curious where you got the quotes from. Did they come from anyone with any actual clout in the Republican party, or just random internet reactionary nutcases?

actually… I don’t think I can put the source in either. It’s on a Conservative board I browse.

Although the point of view that John Kerry committed treason since he may have made the North Vietnamese feel good is a bit more repeated than the ‘people running against Bush make terrorists feel good’ mantra

So you take comments made by an unknown source on a message board you frequent, and ascribe them to all Republicans, at least to the extent that you feel a post addressed to “Republicans” is appropriate here.

I guess by this logic, the Democrats are idiots. (Proof: the Democrats believe an anonymous message board post constitutes some official policy of the Republicans).

Or maybe… just maybe… that generalization is flawed, and it’s merely the OP being idiotic.

Tough call.

Well, I wouldn’t call it treason but it is pretty clear that anyone who opposes Bush or the war on Terror/Iraq or talks about Bush being AWOL or opposes Bush’s budget just doesn’t love America.

Is this a whoosh, or are you really that dense?

Says the man who parks in fucking fire lanes.

WTF, down here everybody does it, it’s not like I do it all the fucking time, and I suppose your driving record is spotless, no speeding or anything.

It’s pretty clear that YOU don’t love America, buddy.

Well, I don’t see any light escaping from him, so belief in density of a particularly extreme nature is warranted.

So why pit them here instead of there?

Okay, so how about non-anonymous Republicans, like county

In point of fact, county is a Democrat.

Furthermore, in light of this link, I’m inclined to call his original contribution to this thread a “whoosh.”

Okay, he played it a little close to the vest. But it wasn’t difficult for me to review his posting history and get confirmation that the county I’ve seen posts from in the past is not likely to hold the beliefs simulated in that post. Nor should it have been difficult for anyone else to do so, before coming to the opposite conclusion.

We’re going to get rid of Shrubya by keeping focused on that goal. May I please implore you all to apply your energies in that direction?

Just ducking in to say that this OP is pretty lame. What some Republicans say is not what all Republicans think. And these (" ") little marks do not make a quote without ascribing it to a source. It also helps if the source of the quote is known to the people you are quoting it to.

I’m a Democrat, by the way, and I think some Republicans are a little over the top in their criticism of “Democrat” thinking (which is no more of one mind than “Republican” thinking). But I doubt that all or even most Republicans think Democrats per se are traitors. Now Republicans, on the other hand. . .

Hows about the OP include actual cites to specific targets of his ire next time:

supporting bush is much more treasonous than opposing him.
Loser is ruining this country…

I haven’t worked in a partisan political campaign in decades. I’m going to work for the Dem’s nominee in this one. Action is the best cure for frustration, IMO.

I just wish the primaries were over so I can get out there and do something for Sharpton or whoever.

Registered republican here. “Running against the president isn’t paramount to treason.”

Check. Um. Thanks for the info.

Next week’s thread: “Contributing $2 to the Presidential Election campaign isn’t grounds to deny bail.”
